He still contended he was in- nOcent""after he was convicted of Selling beer.'Magistrate D. E. Holmes fined him $100 and costs or one month in jail. "I, never sold,. your, worship!" contended Mr. Spain after he was -eenyieted. "' ey pick on one or two. There`s 15 places in this town!" When Mr. Spain said he could. name .these places, the magistrate gave him an opportunity to do so. Before the matter was dropped, John mentioned three or lour names and said that two of these persons had done favors, for the local police. l While this "information" brought--smilesto. the .faces of many people in the court room, efficials of the court made no comment. - Constable Martin Horan, first person to testify in the case, said that, as a result of a complaint, he checked a car parked on the Square on Wednesday, December 11. Lorne Hoggart, of Blyth, was in the car. The constable said he also found two full bottles of beer, two empty bottles and a part - bottle el beer in the auto. Identifies Spain Called as a witness by the Crown, Lorne Hoggart testified that the beer was bought from John Spain. Asked if he could identify :Mr. Spain, Hoggart point- ed him out in the courtroom. James .Taman testified that he was with Hoggart and had bought nine bottles of - beer__ from John Spain for three dollars. Taman disclosed that there had been five persons in their car altogether. Testifying on his own behalf, John Spain stated: "I never saw them before in my life!' Magistrate D. E. Holmes: "Be- -fore whet?" Mr. Spain: "Before today." He denied that he sold beer to the young men or that he had any to sell to them. : 'tI think if these police looked after some of .these other outlets, they'd be making more time," snapped Mr. Spain. . He said that one bottle club, on a street which :he named in court, is being given "protection." ,.Mr. Spain claimed that he has seen, as many as 25 cars around this club. He complained: "Some of these police have- a spite against me. They'd do anything to get me." • Mr. Spain suggested that the police 'had put words in the mouths of the -other witnesses. "1 'mind my own business," de- clared John. Asked what his- busi-ness was, he said that he is 68 years ofd,-reeeives a pension and fs retired. He added that •he does run a 'second-hand business. Mr. Spain • said that he did not recall these instances; he said that his memory -is not too good. • Court was adjourned for a few minutes while a certificate was made o to be entered as proof that 14Ir. He then imposed a fine of $100 and costs or one month. 0 0 Jailed 14 Days For Drunk Driving Pleading guilty to drunk driv- ing, John 'Oliver Tyndall, 32, of R.R. 3, Clinton, was sentenced to 14 days in jail when he appeared in magistrate's court at Goderich last Thursday. His driving license was suspended for one year and his car was impounded. The court was informed . that Mr. Tyndall's car was involved in an accident on Huron road • in Gode- rich at about midnight on January 22. The car ended up against a tree, said Crown Attorney H. Glenn Hays. No other vehicle was in- volved. Wesley John Jefferson, of R.R. 1, Belgrave, pleaded guilty to be- ing the owner of a vehicle which was driven while in unsafe con- dition. He was fined $10 and costs or five .days. The vehicle owned by Jefferson was actually being driven by David E. 3f Clinchey when it came to the notice of Constable Martin Horan in Goderich at about 3 a.m. on January 18. Jefferson was rid- ing as a passenger, the court was told. v. Constable Horan explained that he stopped the vehicle after he watched it weaving through the streets. "I drove it back to the office and I had an awful time I keeping it on the road," he com mented. The car had v faulty steering and needed other repairs, he said. - Walter Karl Gottschalk, 37, of Goderich, was :fined $10 and costs,. or three days, when he pleaded guilty to " careless driving. The charge was laid follovying an ac- cident in Goderich on January 16. Mr. Gottschalk said the wind- shield of his auto was icing up. Just as he started to stop°for the purpose of clearing the windshield, his- car hit a, parked vehicle. At the meeting, Farquhar Oliver predicted a "tough fight" with indications pointing to both a Federal and , a Provincial election this year. a o 0 NEWS IN 1901 GLOBE SEEMS STRANGE TODAY A Signal -Star reader brought to the Signal -Star office this week a copy of the October, 1901, issue. ofThe Globe, of oronte. The 57 -year-old newspaper turned up in a Goderich home during some housecleaning. One story was about an inquiry held into Yonge street land values. It referred to the Oak Hall corner at Yonge and Adelaide streets. It stated that in 1899 the 23 by 188 feet involved was leased for 15 years at $3,000 for the first 10 years and $3,600 for the next five years. Value of the land was placed at $3,482 a foot.
