MacEwen fl THE GODERICH GNAL-STAR Ashfield Township Affairs Reviewed At In commenting on the township road program at the nomination meeting for the Township of Ash- field, Reeve Cecil Blake said that they had experienced a better year this year than the year before and that weather er conditions had per- mitted them to get more accom- plished. Five to six miles of road widening was done in the township with a small piece of hardtop ap- plied. Six small bridges were built. Mr. Blake mentioned the 80 percent grant on bridges and felt that now was the time to be building. "We never know when this will change," he said. "Ash- field has as good a road system as any township in the county," 'Mr. Blake commented. The Goderich High School rate was nine mills this year and it is understood that there is a possibil- ity that it may have to be raised next year. This would eliminate any possibility of lower taxation. Hear Council Remarks of the four councillors. were brief. Andrew Ritchie said they had a fairly easy year with very little expense with municipal ditches. Sandy Contracting had the best bid for the gravel contract. There were two bids for the job. King Contracting had the best bid for the bridge work. Mr. Ritchie felt that Ashfield had roads second to none in the county. He stated that he would not cause an election. In commenting on the hospital situation in the Township. John Bradley stated that they had offer- ed to pay the required sums to Nominations Goderich, Kincardine and Wing - ham if given five years to do so. Goderich had requested $1'1,000, Kincardine $1,484 and Wingham $8,000. The answer from Goderich is not definite. Kincardine has accepted the offer, but Wingham has refused. Donald MacKenzie referred, to the unconditional grant received by the township for the amount of $4,800. This amounts to $3.00 per person. There are 1,600 • in the township. This year the grant is supposed to be for the benefit of farmers. Mr. MacKenzie spoke of four lake banks that are being subdivided and which will soon represent a revenue for the town- ship. Tom Howard stated that this year the township had sprayed weeds for the first time. $280 had been spent and Mr. Howard felt that the results had 'been very satisfactory. Cost 'is $10 per mile for both sides of the road. A few blocks were done with brushkill at a cost of $34 per mile. One taxpayer questioned if the spray was injurious to cattle but the explanation was given that it wasn't. Other Council Nominees The other two men nominated fore council were Allan Reed and Roy Mat;Kay. Mr. Reed said that he felt the council were doing a good job and he would not cause an election. The other nomination was not valid as :Mr. MacKay was not present. Road superintendent Herb Cur- ran gave ,a -detailed breakdown of GDCI NEWS Members have been chosen ``from the Senior Choir to appear on TV on January 26. The group will appear as part of a variety pro- gram. There will be a Christmas dance to raise money to complete the purchase of 30 blazers for the choir. The assembly last week was a sensation with the students. Musical numbers were provided by the class of 10A, Gary Allin, and lisle Rock 'n' ', oll trio. The Rock 'n' Roll trio, formed by Wayne Muck, Wayne Willis and Paul Smith, plaYed: r.0 ren m e r ' s Boogie," "Blue Suede Shoes" and ,"Wake Up Little .. Suzie." Drum- mer's Boogie" was domposed by Wayne Muck. Gary Allin provided a saxophone solo and the students joined in with the class of 10A in the singing of "Aura Lee." Assemblies in charge of Mr. Tucker will be held on Tuesday and Friday mornings for carol singing. There will be a noon hour dance on Fniday. the expenses involved in operating the Ashfield road system. Mr. Curran gave considerable comment on the weed spraying that was started this summer. He strongly favored the spray method and felt that it was very successful this year. The township spent $1,200 ,on weed cutting this year. It was suggested by some present that one cutting and one spray instekd of two cuttings could be done and still not increase the cost too much. The general opinion was the spraying had its place but that considerable cutting was necessary too.—The Sentinel. Goderich, Ontario. Editor, Signal -Star. Sir,—Saturday, December 7, end- ed Safe Driving Week. It will be a week we'll always remember. At about 12.415 a.m., our dog was killed by a sp eding car. " We had watched Pajama Play- house on TV and then put the dog out for a few minutes. As I start- ed for the door to let her in I heard a dull thud and thought someone must be around the back since she had barked once. I opened the door and called her. The streets were „perfectly bare. There was no sign of a car in any direction, but our dog was lying dead on the road. I wonder at what speed the car was travelling when it left town. I wonder, also, if the driver would have slowed down or stopped if it had been a person instead of a dog that step- ped out into the street. We moved on to the corner of Cambria and Elgin avenue last May. For the first few months I didn't think I could stand it. The screech of tires on pavement as cars entered or left town was nerve-racking. You get used to it, though. There have been accidents, too. Two -dogs killed, even a black squirrel hit. Two cars crashed into each other on the way out. A tele- phone pole smashed off. A police car damaged. The Provincial Police sign smashed. A near accident as I watched a convertible skid side- ways on two wheels and then shoot across the road to almost hit an oncoming car and then speed away through the stop lights on Victoria. I'll bet the driver of the other car is still -shaking as he thinks of how close he came to death. While the dust was settling, an- other car came down too fast and missedthe curve. He was lucky though—he managed to stop' be- fore he hit the tree. Our neigh- bors have told us of other accid• ents before we moved in so it hasn't just been an exceptional seven months. Our dog has gone. She was born in northern Quebec and had travel- led with us during the last five years through all the Western Pro- vinces and rmost of the northern States. However, it is hard to ex- plain to a dog that we are no longer living on an Afr Force Sta- tion where there is a speed limit of 15-20 miles an hour and both pedestrians , and animals have a chance. 1 still have a cat and five children. I hope we still have them when we leave here six months from now. I wonder how_.many more ac- cidents there will have to be on this corner before something is done about SPEED. Sincerely, ROSE M.
