Peter S. MacEwan defeated Jame
A. Bisset by 120 votes. Interest
in this contest was particularly
keen since both candidates are
well-known and each is now com-
pleting his 'first' yeatr as a council-
lor.
Retiring ?4ayor John H. Graham,
who stepped down to seek re-elec-
tion as a councillor, suffered his
first defeat. He polled 547 votes
to wind up well back ia eighth

Santa Coming Saturday
Santa Claus is coming to
Goderich on Saturday. Perch-
ed atop a Goderich Fire Truck,
he will come roaring to the
Town Hall on East street at
2.30 p.m.
There, he will be greeted by
a long line of children, some
of them accompanied by par-
ents. These children will
march in front of Santa Claus
in the Fire Hall andeach will
be presented with a lovely bag
of candies, nuts, etc. Members
of the Goderich Fire Depart-
ment will assist Santa in hand -
log out the gifts.
Not only children from Gode-
rich but also those from the
rural areas around Goderich
are invited to come to town
with their parents and meet
Santa Claus.

Christmas corsages and potted
plants made by the school children
of the craft class, were donated.

States Annual Report
Fire loss here in the past year
amounted to only $200 according
to a report presented to Town
Council by the Goderich Fire
Brigade.
A payroll totalling $3,255 for the
year was approved by Council.
The money is divided among the
17 members of the brigade, which
is led by Fire Chid J. J. Boggarth.
The report showed " 76 alarms
answered, 12 practices, 1,4 meet-
ings of the brigade,,15 actual fires,
eight rural ,fires and 27 other calls.
Goderieh Blue Water Band has
refused to help the Goderich Girls'
Trumpet Band by turning over to
the girls' band a portion of, the
money collected from the taxpay-
ers through the band levy, it was
disclosed in Council.
On September, 18, the executive
of the girls' band asked that the
senior band give it 40 percent of
the second half of the town grant
for this yeat It was stated in the
letter that the girls' band had been
re -organized and was holding regu,
lar practices.
DEEVES GETS
FOURTH TERM
The election on Monday in Gode-
rich Township saw John Deeves go
in as reeve with 300 votes while
his opponent, Clayton Laithwaite,
received 259 votes. This gives
Deeves a fourth term as reeve of
Goderich Township.
The voting was reported to be
"very light" by R. E. Thompson,

was sent to the Blue Water Band,
mailed September 18. When the

endeavour to give you some help

The letter was signed by George
Griffiths, secretary -treasurer of the
senior band. The matter was re-
ferred to the 1958 Council for con
sideration.
"The application of the Town of
Goderich to lease a certain park
area adjacent to ,Snug Harbor is
receiving favorable consideration
at our headquarters in Ottawa,"
wrote F. K. McKean, district mar-
ine agent, in a letter to Council.
Ile added, "The area must not
encroach upon the land which has
been leased to Sifto Salt Co., and
I suggest at this time it wourd be
well for the salt company and the
town to come to an understanding
about the roadway which parallels
the park, for jurisdiction and main-
tenance of the road."
The letter was referred to the
water, light and harbor committee.

municipal councils in Gederich and
in Colborne Township. He served
as reeve of Goderieh for five Years
before winning the mayoralty con-
test in last year's elections.
Woman Loads
Mrs. May Mooney, widow of D.
D. Mooney, a former mayor. of
Goderich, headed the poll sfor
Council in her first try. She is the
first women elected, to Council
since Mrs. Jean Hetherington made
it in 1939,
Mrs. Mooney 'rolled up 1,145
Votes, 15 more than Frank Walkom,
Veteran councillor who won re-
election. Councillor William Tip-
ple, who is just completing his first
term, came in third in the race
for the six Council seats.
In fourth place came C. M.
Robertson, who has had several
years of experience on Town Coun-
cil. He was followed by another
familiar figure, Councillor Joe Al-
laire. The last Council seat was
won by Bruce Sully, a newcomer
to the municipal field. Mr. Sully,

A former cotancillor, Mr. Skelton
was returning to the field as a
candidate after an absence of one
year. At the end of the 1950
term, he did not seek re-election
for 1957.

didate John Spam, who amassed
153 votes in his latest attempt.

Marine and General Hospital have
started to come in as the building
is just about ready for occupancy.
Although more than $6,000 in don-
ations have come in within the
past week, the sufn of about $27,000
is still required.
The need is urgent in order that
the furnishing of the new wing
might be proceeded with, accord
ing to plans. Although many
people have been contacted per-
sonally for a donation, the Hospital
Board finds it is unable to make
personal contact with everyone
from whom a donation might be
secured. It is for this reason that
as many persons as possible who
read this article are asked to for-
ward their donation as soon as
possible. This can be mailed to
Mr. C. F. Chapman, secretary of the
Hospital Board, Goderich, Or given
to- any member of the- Hospital
Board. Receipts for income tax
purposes will be mailed to those
sending in donations.

After all these years, South
street has been officially dedicated
as a public road. A by-law to this
effect was passed by Town Council
- Friday night.
Earlier, J. K. Hunter, town solic-
itor, advised: "Although South
street has been opened for many
years and the land comprising that
part of South street, between Ben
nett and Blake streets, has been
owned by the Town of- Goderich
since 1870, the same has never
been dedicated as a public high -
day."
A by-law "opening" South street
and authorizing the widening of a
portion of Bennett street was ap-
proved by Council to facilitate sale
of town property to Central Mort-
gage & Housing Corporation. The
property will be divided into 22
serviced Iots for sale to Prospee
tive home builders.

Hall's monthly report, 155 oecur
rences were reported and attend
ed; two lost persons were found;
nine accidents were reported and
one required investigation; four
bicycles were stolen and four were
recovered; three autos were stolen
and the same number recovered;

seven criminal investigations eon
ducted.

operation with Town Council.

GRANDS MEET
The Past Noble Grands' Club of
the Rebekah Lodge held a meet
ing at Tiger Dunlop Inn on Tues-
day with a large attendance of
members.
Mrs. M. Tweedie, the president,
was in charge. Preceeding the
meeting a turkey banquet was
enjoYed. A short business session
included sending of Christmas re
membrances to the sick and shut
ins. Mrs. Aileen Fritzley was in
stalled as a new member and wel
comed.
At the conclusion of the meetini
a social half hour was enjoyed
with prizes going to Mrs. M. Doak
and Miss S. Noble.
Miss Sylvia Chisholm, nurse in
training at St. Joseph's Hospital,
London, visited at the week -end
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
J. Chisholm.
Twenty-tive people will be
made happier than usual as a
result of an announcement to
be made at the Goderich Arena
Saturday night. It will be
made during the intermission
between the second and third
periods of the St. Marys-Gode-
rich Junior hockey game.
Following a draw, the names
of 25 people who were lucky
winners of a turkey on the
Lions Club Christmas draw
will he announced, by Chair-
man Bill Lumby of the Lions
Ways and Means Committee.
Those winners present will be
presented with a chit while
those not present will have one
forwarded to them. With this
chit they will he able to go to
the butcher of their choice in
Goderich and select a lovely
turkey for free.
Tickets on the draw will he
on sale at the arena up- to the
time the draw is made.

Polls were open from 10 a.m. te

all in to the Town Hall by 8 p.m,
a little earlier than last year.
During the evening, the Town
Hall offices and corridor were
jammed with interested citizens
who came to get first-hand news
of how the vote was going Most
of the candidates were also on
hand to hear the results as they
came in from thee various sub
divisions.
Though Town Council has said
before that it wants to settle the
water problem first, Dr. A. E.
Berry won't let it forget about
sewage disposal.
In is letter read in Council Fri-
day, Dr. kerry, general manager of
Ontario Water Resources Commis-
sion, suggested that representatives
of Council go to his aiffice in Tor-
onto "to discuss the' whole ques-
tion of sewage disposal for your
municipality."
A delegation will go shortly,
Council decided.
Dr. Berry's letter followed re-
ceipt of an application from the
town for construction of a sewer
on Wilson street to serve the
Clingan subdivision. Several
weeks ago, Dr. Berry expressed
concern over the adequacy of the
local sewerage system after he
received an application film the
town for extension of sewage fediities to lots in the new land as-
sembly project.
Council passed an motion "that
no deductions be made from the
remuneration to mayor and Coun-
cil for meetings absent during the
period July 1 -December 31."
It is planned that Local Improve-
ment debentures totalling $8,115
will be taken up, for the most part,
from money on hand in the ceme-
tery perpetuity funds. The 15 -year
debentures, issued for work done
in 1956, bear interest at the rte
of five and one-half percent.
Laud Co-operation
Council voiced appreciation to
C. C. Logie, diaisional engineer,
ONR, Stratford, for expediting con-
struction of the h6spital draM.
When askedetts give petinission to
the town to take he drain under
the railway tracks, Mr. Logie gave
speedy approval./
Council was informed that, as of
November 30, $44,946.90 in 1957
taxes remained unpaid. In addi-
tion, as of the same date, there was
$22,528.34 in uncollected taxes
from the 1952-56 period.
A Lipns Club letter, signed by
Secretary John. Stringer, thanked
Council for financial assistance in
connection with the annual child-
ren's party.
A resolution from Goderich Jun-
ior Chamber of Commerce; urging
Council to consider doubling the
capacity of the proposed new water
plantwas referred to next year's
Council. The resolution, designed
to place Goderich in a better posi
tion to attract new industries, was
outlined in an earlier issue of The
Signal -Star.
'Suffers Burns
To Right Hark,
Harry Crane suffered serious
burns to his right hand on Sunday
while installing a pot -head termin-
al on the underground cable lead-
ing into Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital.
Mr. Crane, PUC foreman, was
working for MacDonald Electric at
the time of the accident A hot
sealing compound was being pour-
ed when some of it spilled onto
the glove he was wearing on his
right hand.
Portunately, Mr. Crane didn't
have far to go .to obtain medical
attention. At mid -week, he was
still confined to hospital.

Town Council's police committee,
has received a request from thee
local police constables for salary
increases of $300 per year. The
request has been referred to the
1958 Town Oilmen. The chief has
not submitted any request in this
regard.

night The matteinft- referred
to the two Council representatives
on the Arena Committee. They
will bringin a report later, if it is
necessary.
In his letter addressed to the
town cleft, Mr. Berry said:
"I understand that there hat
been considerable controversy over
the matter of the Gedetich Figure
Skating Club-boing unable to oper-
ate due to lack of proper hours
for ice time.
"In making the foregoing state-
ment, the Figure Skating -Club has
named myself as being responsible
for this situation.
"May I point out that since the
night of September 12, 1957, lb
have had no contact with an mem- a5
ber of the Figure Skating Club.
The only contact that I have ;ever
had with this club has been at our
regular committee meetings. Nor
has any member of the Figure
Skating Club contacted the Arena
Committee since the night of
September 12, 1957.
"I am not responsible for the
hours allocated any parties con-
cerned about ice time. This is n
matter for the committee to de-
cide upon ,and instruct the arena
manager accordingly. Any adjust-
ments of the schednle are made
through the co-operation of the
parties concerned and the manager
of the arena.
"On contacting Mr. Brennan last
evening, I advised that if he wished
a meeting all he had to do was
advise our chairman accordingly.'
Mr. Berry concluded, "1, person-
ally, believe figure skating -should
be carried on but that all mattere
pertaining to the subject should
he handled through the proper
channels of the committee con,
cerned."

home for the monthly meeting of
the Goderich Graduate Nurses' As-
sociation. There wee an attend-

There was a nice array of
candies brought to the meeting to
be distributed later in decorated
jars to the patients in the new
wing of the hospital, Mere was
