Deer Catch Is
Up This Year
This year, deer hunters in the
Huron District had to pursue their
favorite sport in the face of ex-
tremely adverse weather, said the
Ontario Department of Lands and
Forests. Despite the rain and the
excess of water in the bush, hunt-
ers achieved a higher success than
in 1956; the hunter success this
year being 23% as against last
year's 13%. Although the overall
hunting success is consistantly
higher in larger parties, the aver-
age number of hunters per party
this year numbered slightly less
than four.
Many hunters passing through
the deer checking station at Wiar-
ton expressed interest in the
method of aging deer. This is
done accurately by examining the
teeth in the lower jaw of the deer.
Statistics collected regarding the
ages of the deer taken in the hunt
enable game managers to ascer-
tain the mortality rates, survival
rates, abnoralities in the popula-
tion structure and the number of
deer in a population. From these
statistics, predictions can be made
for the next year's season, inform-
ation which is valuable in setting
seasons.
