DUKE ELLINGTON'S BAND
Nearly 1,600 Attend
Policemen's Dance Here
Nearly 1;600 people swarmed in-
to the Goderich Arena Friday night
to hear the ni isic–of the famed
Duke Ellington band. The 15 -piece
group of colored dispensers of
modern dance routines was
brought here by the Huron County
Police Association who reported a
net profit of more than $300 on
the night's show. Total expenses,
including cost of-, orchestra, a -
,mounted to about $1,700.
While the mu.sipians found the
atmosphere of the arena a bit more
chilly than that to which they are
normally accustomed, they gave
out with plenty -of warm music for
an enjoyable evening. Dancers
came from a widespread section of
Western Ontario for the occasion.
Many came to just listen to the
music but did not dance.
Police Chief F. M. Hall, of Gode-
rich, chairman of the Association's
dance committee, said that var•ieri's
business firms throughout the
County bad made donations to the
event for which the Association
was most thankful. The Associ-
ation was also pleased with the
excellent patronage given their
dance..

As He Saw It !
Some of the more unusual
sights of rural Ontario's links
with the past are a bit battling,..
tp the younger generation.
Three-year-old Christopher
Patterson, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Donald Patterson, of Toronto,
and formerly of Goderich,
found such a sight near the
village of Arthur. Chris was
accompanying his grandpar-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. William
Bisset, on a trip from Toronto
to their honje in Goderich. On
the southern outskirts of
Arthur, where highways six
and nine cross, young Chris
was peering 'intently out the
car wind,. at something he
had never seen before. He s;tv
one of those elderly Irish farm-
ers of the Arthur area, heading
for the village in his ho - e
and buggy. The buggy wris
one with a hood on top and
a fringe around it. Finally,
Chris turned excitedly to his
grandfather -driving the car
and shouted, "Look grandpa,
there's a horse pulling the first
Ford!"
