Eedyr had a sudden attack of ap-
pendietis the first of last week and
underwent an operation on Tues-
day evening at Goderich hospital.
She,.. recovered quickly and was
brought home on Saturday. She
is looking forward to her return
to school.

daughter, Cathy, of Toronto, and

is a brother of Mrs. McWhinney's -
mother, who is visiting also from
Farrens' Point, near Cornwall.
Miss Clara Sproul, Stratford,
spent the week -end with her
sisters, Misses Nettie and Rebina
Sproul. Visiting on Monday were
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Henson, Strat-
ford.
Several of the Y.P.U. attended a
rally at Exeter on Tuesday night
of this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hanson, of
East Tawas, Michigan, are visiting
the latter's sister-in-law, Mrs S.
J. Kilpatrick.
Sgt. F. W. Elliott and wife, of
Camp Borden, visited their aunt,
Miss Betty Elliott, and uncle,
Arthur Elliott, on Sunday.

Anglican Guild. Mrs. BenMole
presided for the opening of the
Lord's Prayer and 'Guild Prayer.
Mrs. Wm. Caesar read the Scrip-
ture lesson. Mrs. Ben Mole read
a topic by Padre W. A. Young. Rev.
H. L. Jennings outlined his duties
as Rural Dean of Bruce County.
.Mrs. Mole, the hostess, served
lunch.
Mr. and Mrs. George Errington
(iiee Jean Acheson) were honored
with a dance reception al the Dun-
gannon Agricultural Hall on Fri-
day night. At lunch time Mrs.
Toni, Young. read an address of
best wishes and a purse of money
was presented to the young couple
by Mr. Ernest Durnin.

Big Day Saturday
For Racing Men
Final race meet of the season
will be held at Agricultural Park
on Saturday. Three classified races
are scheduled and a large number
of entries has been received.
In the evening—rain or shine—
the arena auditorium will be the
scene of the horsemen's banquet,
followed by entertainment and
dancing. This popular annual
event will be well attended, too,
judging by the great many people
who have already signified that
they will be present..
At the afternoon races, there
will be no extra chargefor the
grandstand, and cars and children
will be admitted free. The starting
gate will be in operation and bet-
ting privileges will be available.

Due Here Saturday
Looal and district Iaw enforce-
ment officers will attend a special
lecture, illustrated with films, at
the Town Hall Saturday night. The
spotlight will be on a study of
auto theft and salvage rackets.
Taking active parts in the pro-
gram will be a man from the FBI,
the police chief from Holley, Mich.,
and two representatives of the
National Auto Theft Bureau, which
has headquarters in Chicago.
The show has been arranged
through the Goderich Police De-
partment.

etc., a "penny auction" was held.
Each member had invited at last
one visitor, alta)etlher there
were about 78 ladies in attendance.

auctioneer, and the bidding was
fast and furious. To close pro-
ceedings, a delicious bunch was
served by various members of the
W.A. 4.
Thanksgiving service was held
at the regular time, last Sunday.
The ehw' ;. was beautifully decor-
ated for the occasion by the Young
People's Union. Mr. Kennedy of-
ficiated and two babies were bap-
tized. They were Mr. and Mrs.
Ronald cPentland's small son, Janes
Elwyn, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
Matthew's little daughter, Judy
Lynn. Judy Matthews took a prize
in the baby show at Dungannon
Fair recently.
Congratulations are in order for
Mx. James Rutledge, who was mar-
ried on Saturday last to Miss Elsie
Essex of Port Albert.

Goderich, visited with Mr. and Mrs.
R. Pentland on Sunday.

Duke Ellington, one of the
world's best known musicians, is
scheduled to arrive in Goderich at
about 6 p.m. Friday, a few hours
before the big dance starts at the
arena.
Already 1,500 tickets have been
sold, says Police Chief F. M. Hall,
who has been ih charge of the ar-
rangements. The dance is spon-
sored by Huron County Police As-
sociation to which the county's
municipal police officers belong.
The men in blue expect a crowd
of 1,500 to 2,000 to be at the arena
to hear and dance to the music
of. the Duke and his orchestra.
The orchestra is to leave New York
in a bus tonight and will come
directly to Goderich, Chief Hall
understands.

At The Waterfront
Last Friday, the Douglas Hough-
ton brought in the barge, John
Fritz, to be laid up at Goderich
Harbor. On Saturday the .l;Gricol-
doc arrived with a load of grain
from the Lakehead.
Work on the north breakwater
ended Saturday when the Skipper•
towed in the barge of Intrusion
Prepakt for the last time.
The Hudson and also the • Maun-
aloa arrived Sunday with grain
from the `Lakehead. On that day,
ton, the Jones B. Eads cleared for
Sarnia after being laid up here
since August 13.
The Altadoc and Collingdoc,
which have been laid up in the
.harbor here since mid -summer, will
be filled with storage grain and
will remain with the winter fleet
here.
