With the flow of tourist traffic along High-
way 21 just about to commence for ;the
summer season, painteis are busy giving the
antiquated bridge over tlie Maitland River
at Saltford a new coat of paint. At a time
when local residents expected the Ontario
Department of Highways to be letting this
75year-old bridge die away preparatory to
going to the "boneyard grave," the Depart-
ment is painting it as if the bridge is to be
like the little brook "going on forever."
This bridge is the last ofits species on High-
way 21 and the time 4s long past due when
it shcsuld be removed and a highway. worthy
of the name built to replace the dangerous
approaches to it. Both town and country
officials have denounced the painting' of it
as an apparent move to keep the old. bridge
in use for some years to come. Mayor John
Graham, of Goderich, has expressed sur-
prise that the Ontario Department of High
ways is acting in the way it has been. Reeve
John Kernighan, of Colborne Township, has
branded the latest move as "simply ridicu
lus spending money on such an old bridge"
In the meantime. district residents are hop-
ing that belated action will take place soon
in remedying an annoying traffic problem
in our area.
