Sentence Youths
Who Took Truck
Two youths 'who stole a Defta ,`t-
ment of Righways truck cwere n d
$50 each, talus costs, or three weeks
in jail, when they appeared before
Magistrate D. E. Holmes here last
Thursday.
Robert Grant Laws, of Goderich,
and Partici Herbert MaoAdam, of
1$.11,.1, Goderich, pleaded guilty to
the charges. The offence occurred
in Hay Township on May`;, 2.
The' two youths anode off with a
stake truck whie-h'had been parked
near where a road gang was work-
ing, according to police. After
driving a relatively short distance,
the youths were apprehended at St.
Joseph. There was evidence they
had been drinking.
Pleading guilty to impaired driv
ing, Charles Leroy :gown, 33, of
R.R. 1, Port Albert, was fined $75
and costs or two weeks in jail.
On a separate charge of driving
without a permit, he was fined
$10 and costs or five days. He was
charged after ipolice had observed
hirci on May 20.
Carl Bender, 21, of R.R. 3, Clin-
ton, was fined $25 and costs or
two weeks in jail far driving while
prohibited. The car was automat-
ically seized by the crown.
John Pirie, of Goderich, was
fined $5 and costs, or one week in
jail, for using an artificial light for
the taking of fish, contrary to the
Special Fishery Regulations for
Ontario. The charge 'was connect-
ed with a set of circumstance's aired
in court two weeks earlier. At
that time Mr. Pirie was 'fined for
fishing on private property after
the owner had given him notice
to leave.
The court was informed that a
lantern was found in the possession
of Mr. Pirie when he was fishing
on Russell Pfrimmer's property at
Benmiller on the night, that the
trout season opened. In announc-
ing the fine, the magistrate warned
that the maximum fine for the
offence is $1,000, or, in default, 12
months in jail.

Millbank, were Sunday guests with
Mr. and Mrs. Reg. Fuller. Rev.
Cox preached the anniversary ser-
vice at Victoria Street Church.
Week -end guests with Mr. and

were Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Saunders,
of Toronto.
Mr. and Mrs. F. Beasley, of Tor-
onto, visited at the week -end with
their daughter, Mrs. Allan Mac-

Mrs: Jae , Boyce, formerly of
Goderich h•n her twin brother,
Wilson Armstrong, -of Seaforth,
celebrated their 75th birthday on
Tuesday, May 28, at the home
of Mrs, Boyce's son, Leonard, and

Twilight Race Meet 4
Classes All Filled
With all classes filled up, plenty
of action is assured in Saturday's
twilight harness racing meet at
Agricultural Park. The meet will
start at 5.30 p.m., says Reg. McGee,
secretary of Goderich Trotting and
Agricultural Association.
The !track is in A-1 shape and
new felnces have been erected
alongside' the grandstand. Exten-
sive improvements haveaalso 'been
made to the barns.
A total of $1,100 in prize money
'will—be divided among the five
races. The classes are as follows:
free-ffor-all, 2.21, 2.25 and 2.30 (two
divisions).
For this first meet of the season,
there will be no extra charge for
a grandstand seat, says.lieg.

The Goderich Ladies' Social
Bowling League enjoyed a social
evening recently. After a turkey
banquet at the Club Grill with 33
attending, prizes were presented
to the winning teams.
First prize was won by the Bomb-
ers, Isabel Riehl, Vi Carter, Kitty
Chapman, Leah Breckenridge,
Agnes Weber, Marj. McMillan.
Second p>;ize went to the Strike -
Outs, Lucy Johnston, Sadie Gilders,

OBITUARY
WILLIAM E. STOTHORS
A resident of Goderich for al-
most sixty years, William Edwin
Stothers died on Sunday, May 26,
in his 76th year. He had suffered
a long illness and was confined to
Alexandra., Hospital for the past
month. Deceased was a son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Stothers
and was born at Auburn, later
moving to Dungannon. In 1898 he
moved to Goderich where he con-
ducted a woodworI ing and carriage
making shop at the corner of Vic-
toria and Trafalgar streets.
In 1912 he was married to Lucy
Evelyn Fisher, of Benmiller, who
now survives as well as two child-
ren, Keith, of St. Thomas, and Mrs.
Fiwart Young (Helen), of Goderich.
There are also two sisters, Miss
Clara and Mrs. Walter Hawthorne
(Ruby), both of Goderich, surviving.
Mr. Stothers wasmember of
Knox Presbyterian Church. The
funeral service was conducted by
Rev. R. G. MacMillan at Stiles
funeral home on Tuesday after-
noon with interment in Maitland
cemetery. The pallbearers were
Leonard Westbrook, Leo Walza•k,
Harvey Cutt, Franklin Hawthorne,
Wilfred Fisher and Grant Fisher.

After a lingering illness of six
months, Geraldine McEwen Van -
stone died at Alexandra Hospital,
Goderich, on Wednesday, May 22,
in her 49th year. She was born
in Goderich, a daughter of the late
Mr. and Mfrs. J. J. McElwen and re-
ceived her education at the publiic
school and Collegiate Institute
here. Graduating from Stratford
Normal School, She taught at sev-
eral schools in )the district includ-
ing Noe 8 Colborne Township, No.
1 Goderich Township, Ashfield
Township and Moncrieff. She was
a member of Knox Presbyterian
Church.
The many floral tributes testified
to the esteem in which she was
held.
In June, 1955, she was married
to Stanley Vanstone, of Goderich,
formerly of Colborne Townshi

The funeral serve was helti
at the Lodge funeral home, Moya
treal street, on Friday afternoon
with interment being made in Cs -
borne cemetery. Rev. R. G. Hazel
wood, •of Mount Forest, officiated.

Vanstone, of Benmiller; Dick Par;
of 'Dungannon; Jack Barton, of Tor-
onto; OrvalHarrison, of Mencrieff;
Burns Jerry and Barrie Walter, of
Goderieh.

Mrs. Isabel Riehl, secretary of
the club, was the recipient of a
cup and saucer donated by the
president, Mrs. Norma Kingswell,
for her work during the year.
After the election of officers for
the coming year, the ladies were
entertained by the committee at
the home of Mrs. Peg Wood, where -
cards, bingo and variety program
were enjoyed.

ing the Goderich Business Colli
during the past year.

graduated in Public Health nursing.
Mrs. Wm. Merrall who had been
visiting her parents, Mr. and -Mrs
Reg. Fuller, the past week, re-
turned to her home at Ottawa on
Friday.
