Eighty tra-,lc charges were laid
tby town police during April, ac-
cording to the monthly police re-
port presented to Town Council
Friday night.
The total number of charges laid
was the highest in many months --
and probably a record for Gode-
rich.
Of the 80 charges, fig were laid
under the Highway Traffic Act and
11 under the local traffic by-law.
In addition, nine charges were
laid under the Criminal Code dur-
ing April. None was laid under
the Canada Temperance Act.
Seven thefts were reported in
the month. Still unsolved is the
case. in which burglars took a safe,
containing $1,397 in .cash and valu-
ables, from the Si.mpssrns-Sears
order office on the Square
The report reveals ttha' two
autos were stolen arld three were
recovered in April. One was re-
covered for Centralia. Six st 't; n
bicycles were found.
-Expenses of the police depart-
ment for the month totalled
1,449.94.
To interview Applicants
Council decided to hold a special
meeting on May 9 for t,b:e purpose
of interviewing applicants for the
position of police constable. The
addition of a fifth full-time man
was approved recently:
At Friday night's session, Coun-
cil also adopted a committee of the
whole report that read in part as
follows: "We recommend that, ef-
fective May 5, .the chief constable
be instructed to lay all informa-
tions relating to town police mat-
ters." .
An "information" forms the basis
of a charge. For a month, as an
experiment, constables had been
allowed to lay their own inform-
atims, bu: this apparently did not
prove satisfactory.
Council also approved a recom-
mendation that "in case an appeal
lodged by a town police constable;
upon recommendation of the crown
attorney, is dismissed, the town
assume any costs awarded against
the constable."
Thus, in event a constable ap-
pealed a magistrate's decision and
then lost the appeal, he would not
have to pay the court costs out of
his awn pocket.

'Kron County
Form Report
By A. S. Bolton, Asst. A. Rep.
Cold weather accompanied by
frosts at night slowed down the
growth of grass and other crops,
particularly at the end of the week.
Frosts on Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday nights of last week did
considerable darnage to the clover
and other susceptible crops.
Soil conditions have been quite
favorable for the seeding of cereal
grains and most of the farmers
finished seeding operations by the
end of last week. A good number
of cattle have been turned out to
pasture, particularly in the south
end of the county. This, of course,
was made possible by the rapid
growth of grass two weeks ago and
it's certain the farmers are happy
to be relieved of some of the
stable cleaning and other winter
Mores.
