"That is creating a very danger-

after questioning Police Chief F.

Magistrate D. E. Holmes indicat-

thregving old mow, Mr. Donnelly."
The quesU nn arose during the
hearing of e. larges resulting from
two April Fools' Day pranks that
backfired. Thomas Arthur Clark,
21, of Goderich, had pleaded guilty
earlier. He was sentenced to two
weeks in jail for phoning a false
fire alarm in to the local telephone
exchange in the early.d hours of
April 1.
On a second charge of imperson-
ating a police officer, he was fined
$20 and cats or two more weeks
in jail. He was ordered to pay
five dollars into court to defray
expenses incurred when an ambul-
ance was called out as a result of
his hoax.
Twu other youths, Rock Cote and
Joseph Chapman, were each fined
$20 and costs or two weeks in
jail in connection with ringing in
the false alarm. '['hey had pleaded
not guilty. Si-

Clark, Cute and Chapman had
been driving around in a car with
Leonard Kerr, G<rrd. Kerr and
Douglas Kerr on the date the of-
fences occurred.
On the witness stand, Leonard
Kerr, 16, of Dungannon, said that
Clark phoned Mr. Lodge to say that
an ambulance was needed at the
hospital. The youth represented

household furnishings for
which they no longer have

this you can help a worthy

made, the six youths waited in
their car on the Square until the
ambulance went by on ds way to
answer the fake call.
According to the witness, it Was
also ('lark's idea to phone the tele-
phone exchange to report an im-
aginary fire on the farm of Hediey
Prouse. Apparently, the operator
suspected something fishy and con-
tacted police instead of calling out
firemen.
Mr. Donnelly asked Chief Hall
why all six youths weren't charged.
The chief replied, "My information

When Constable South was •rall-

him why the other three youths

"They made voluntary state
ments." replied the constable He

Obviously feeling very strongly
about the matter, Mr. Donnelly de -
!dared, "The mistake is this, the
decision was made -not on the basis
of how much each was implicated,
but on their conduct in the police
office afterwards."
The magistrate agreed with this
particular cbsert, at:on. but he
pointed out that it was not the
fir -t time that this had happened.
The magistrate said that during
his 18 years as crc'wn attorney, it
happened not infrequently that a
man who helped the police escaped
with a Lighter cbarge or was not
charged at all.
'He did not agree with Mr. Don-
neily, who felt that serious harm
