On Saturday, Goderich downed Clinton 4-3 in the afternoon, then, went on to trim Exeter 7-2 in the anal game of the tourney. The boys were presented with a trophy for their efforts. PiERCE Ashfield Township native, Anthony J. Pierce, died suddenly in Sarnia on March 23. Mr. Pierce was in his 74th year. He and his wife, the former Margaret Speers, had celebrated their 50:th wedding anniVersary earlier this year. Born in Ashfield, he was the son of Nathaniel Pierce and Elesha Hughes Pierce. He farmed at Iteston, Manitoba, before retiring to Sarnia. -- - Surviving, besides his widow, is one son, Clifford, and two grand - Children, James and Lois, all of - Sarnia; one sister, Mrs. Annie Nixon, of allpawan, Saskatchewan, and several cousins, including Mrs. Neil McKinnon, of Goderich. Following funeral service at the McLennan and MacKenzie funeral home in Lucknow, burial/took place in Greenhill cemetery. MRS. SARAH MARIA JAMES ! The funeral was held at the Stiles funeral home on Wednesday of Mrs. Sarah Maria James, Whose ' death occurred on Sunday at the age of 88. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Armstrong of West Wawanosh. She ' ' attended school West Wawanosh and lived there until her marriage , in 1893 to William James. They I then lived in East Wawanosh. Since the death of her husband in 1923 she has lived in Goderieh. She was a member of North Street United Church for 34 years, a member of the Octogenarian Club and a former member of the Goderich W.I. Mrs. :James is survived by two sons, t ordon, of Windsor, and Warrelti, of Goderich, and four daughters, Mrs. A. Newman, Mrs. H. Simpson, of Windsor, and Mrs. . J. McConnell and Mrs. C. Wicklund, of Detroit; also a sister, Mrs. Mar Smith, of Brussels; 14 grandchild- ren and two great-grandchildren. Rev. A. E. Eustace of North Street United Church conducted the mineral service. Four members from the Gode- rich branch of the Cancer Society were present to show a film, "Can- cer Crusade." They also took part in a panel discussion led by Mrs. A. M. Harper with Mrs. Con Baech- ler of the Women's Service Com- mittee. Mr. Fred Sturdy, educa- tional chairman, and Robert Sperl- ing, president of the branch, ex- plained the work in the coffin:Masi* Colborne Township will not be canvassed this year but it is hoped that anyone wishing to make a donation to this cause will contact any member of the branch. Lunch was served. Proceeds of the even- ing went to the Cancer Society. R./ ARENA -SCHEDULE Despite some potent help from Lucknow !Lions Club, the Goderich Lions were caged by the Ontario Provincial Police in the thud an- nual 'Lions-OPP benefit hockey game here last Friday. The men in the "Holstein" sweat- ers triumphed 9-7 before a crowd of around 1,300 persons.i'As a re- sult of :the game and The extra tickets which were sold, each side stands to net at least $500 for welfare :work. A highlight of the game was the appearance ef Albert Chin, one of the famed brothers from Luck - now, in a Lions uniform. Still displaying plenty of hockey know- how, he scored two goals and help- ed set up other plays. Gord Farlow's three -goal per- formance for the Lions was tops for the night. Other marksmen for the losers were Bill Lunaby and Hugh Hall. For the OPP, Ken Armstrong, of Stratford detachment, and Bob Border, of Walkerton, scored two apiece. Single counters were col- leeteel by Cecil 'Gibbons, Whitey Wade, A. Pike, W. Watt and Bob Sims. The last nicanaed offieeF also achieved a bit eif A reputatibn as the "bad man" of the game. Strictly For Fun But it was all for fun, and if some 6f the partieipants seemed partial to stickhandliug from 'a kneeling position, instead of stand- ing on their skates, the crowd didn't, seem to mind. The cup won last year by the 'Lions Club was presented to "Nip" Whetstone, team manager, by Judge Frank Fingland. The judge was introduced by Sheriff Nelson Hill. Guy Emerson aoted as master of ceremoniers, and Ebb Ross an- nounced the draw winners. / Between periods, spectators were entertained by Goderich.Pipe Band and by Doris Johnston, of Clinton, who played the marimba. Tom O'Neill, former Toronto Maple Leaf hockey player, was one of the referees.
