New York Press, ultra -pro- tectionist organ, concedes that the proposed duty of twenty-five cents a bushel on Canadian barley is - cessis e, and detrimental to the in- #crests of the United States, It says that throughout the state of New York there is a practical unanimity in opposition to this duty. It will not do to say that the brewers and m'a'sters are be- hind the demand for a loaner rate, for it comes from the press irre- spective of party and without refer- ence to the use of beer as a bever- age. How important tete interests are that the proposed tariff would ripple if not wiped out as set forth by the Festora Commercial Bulletin, ▪ NOTES. >sz'ry;' h is the best authority that can be quot.:3 on special snores of to ea:aphe { fxcamrn 1 business in the east. Tien committee appointed by the Board of Tradeon the subject of a water supply for domestic purposes and forprotection from fire reported so favorablyas regardstheprobable sources of supply and the cost that the matter may be said to be within measureable reach. An ef- ficient supply for protection from fire would be of greater value to the town than we have probably yet es- timated. Without needlessly alarm- ing our neighbors we would state our opinion that the present supply is of very doubtful value in case of emergency. With the many indi- cations ndications of springs in the neighbor- hood, it is incumbent upon us to employ the best meats in our power to avert as far as possible a danger Oto which we are at all times liable. Thefirst direct and immediate bene- fit to us from a good system of water works, would be a lessened expendi- ture for fire insurance, the cost of which, is, at present, a great deal higher than we like to have it. We should then be able to rest some- what free from the anxiety we now feel. The Board of Trade will shortly have detailed :statement of cost of plant and all other necessary information to lay before the public.
