Vying to understand men
is aproblem that has occupied
the attention of wome:; down
r wagh the centuries, On the
approach of the Christmas
shopping season, it is a prob-
lem that requires particular
attention.
Sone help on the subject is
given by "The Tatler" in the
following description of
",men":
.If yrou 'flatter a man you
frighten :Wm 't death. If you
don't. you bore him to death.
If you permit him to make
love to you, he gets tired of
you in the end. If you don't,
he gets tired of you in the be-
ginning. If you believe every-
thing he tells you, he thinks
yeti are afool. If you don't,
you are a cynic.
If you wear gay colors and
startling hats he hesitates to
take you out. But if you wear
GUEST
a brown beret and a tailored
suit, he takes you out and
then stares at a woman in a
startling hat and gay colors.
If you are the clinging vine
type, he doubts if you have a
brain. If you are a modern in-
telligent woman, he doubts if
you have a heart.
Man Ls just a worn in the
dust. He comes along, strug-
gles for a while, and finally
some chicken gets him.

Capacity crowds applauded "Mi- 0
gel Street," a three -act play pre-' is 7
sented by Goderich Little Theatre
in MacKay Hall on Wednesday and
Thursday of last week. The pro-
dnaction represents the local group's
first entry in the Western Ontario
Drama League Festival.
Acting as adjudicator, Father C.
P. Crowley, pr yfessor of English
from Assumption University, Wind-
sor, praised the players for "a
well-balanced. job."
In the mystery thriller, which
was set in the 1880's in London,
England, ,,Virginia Lodge played
Bella Manningham°, who was driven
to the brink of insanity by her
sinister husband, Jack. Tony
Merser took the role of the hus-
band, who was filially brought to
justice through the efforts of
Police Inspector Rough, played by
Harold Beennan.

O well, for, as he commented, "I
noticed three ladies in the back
row fainted and one person jump-
ed a foot when I moved my chair."
He did rthink that the group
could have anade amore out of the
play. "The tension has to mount
from the opening cumin," he ex-
plained. "The thing should have
been paced up and up." He sug-
gested that. improvements could be
made in the first half of the first
act, which she: felt was the weakest
part of the play.
Tempo Good
FATHER CROWLEY
the best in the show," said Father
Crowley. "He had a quiet con-
fidence, a sense of humor and
suspense. His timing was excep-
tionally good." The adjudicator's
only criticism was that perhaps the
actor's voice sounded a trifle young
for the role of the veteran sleuth.
Pamela Sadler, as Nancy, the
saucy, uninhibited maid, 'was "ex-
ceptionally good," stated Father
Cr;rwrley. He thought that she pro-
jected her voice better than anyone
in the play.
He also commended Marjorie
Macfie, who played F:l:iiabeth, the
housekeeper. And he found that
Jack Marriott and Bill Chase were
very "authentic looking" police-
men.
"Angel Street" is essentially a
mystery melodrama designed for
thrills, commented the adjudicator.
He felt the Goderich players had
maintained the suspense fairly
But the tempo was good and
the production did not drag said
Father Crowley. "All the charac-
ters, •I thought, were fairly auth-
entic, duepartly to the costumes,"
he said. "The costumes Were ex-
cellent."
He had considerable praise for
the set which he Melt was original
and caught the atmosphere of
"Angel Street."
The play was directed by Mari-
onne Johnston, of Stratford, and
assistant director was Mary Ford.
The Goderich play is one of 17
preliminary entries in the Western
Ontario Drama League Festival.
From the 17 entries, 'five groups
will be chosen to participate in
the festival at Kitchener, January
23- 26.
Father Crowley was introduced
at the end of Thursday night's
'performance by Mrs. Florence
Smith, of London, who"'was vice-
president of WODL last ylar. On
both nights, the audiences were
welcomed by Mrs. Janet Anderson,
second vice-president of Goderich
Little Theatre.
The costumes worn by Virginia
Lodge and Pamela Sadler were
loaned by Mrs. Bruce Smith, of
Goderich. The gowns were origin-
ally purchased by Mrs. Robert
Smith in Paris in 1878, and worn
by her at various outstanding
social functions, one of them being
to meet the Marquis of Lorne, who
was governor-general of Canada at
that time.

FRONT GREY CUP TO CHRISTMAS
QBy E. L Homewood)
The Santa Claus parade and
Grey 'Cup Day are over, and nov!
comes Christmas! And as Christ-
mas appyoaeIies, into most homes
comes a little goodness (displayed
particularly by children), a little
confusion, a little merriment, a
little def.
Thousands of little hearts thrill-
ed as Santa arrived for his pre-
Christinas interviews. In the big
cities he allowed tractors and
trucks to pull his reindeer and
sleigh atop huge trailers. In the
smaller centres he turned to such
modern conveyances as the heli-
copter. It was a happy time!
It was a different story when
Grey Cup Day was over. Happi-
ness was governed to some extent
by geographical location.
And geography and circum-
stance will have some effect on the
happiness of many this Christmas
season.
It Will be a bleak Christmas for
the half -million or more refugees
from revolt -torn Hungary who look
to the free world for help and
understanding. The handfuls of
Christians in some lands where
freedom is almost a stranger will
gather to worship this Christmas
in an atmosphere of fear and ap-
prehension.
And There In Canada, hearts will
be 'heavy in Springhill, N.S., where
families have been broken by ,disc
aster, and in thousands of homes
where traffic mishaps have taken
their toll.
Arvid the colorful decorations of
the Christmas tree, the gay wrap.
piEags of the Gift, we give and re-
ceive, the warm and merry greet-
ings we extend, we pause and won-
der. What is Christmas? What
does it mean Ito us in this year of,
strife and restlessness?
And wondering, we discover that
Christmas is love, A love that
does not end with the giving of
gifts, or b that we ,have the
responsibility, of being our bro.
ther's
br o-
ther's keeper, but goers on to rec i• •-
.nize that we must be our brother's
brother. With this, we have found
something of the real meaning and
spirit of Christmas.
