GODERICH DISTRICT COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE
Thursday, November 15th, saw
an eager group of 30 GDCI stud-
ents accompanied by'eaChers, Miss
J. Allen and Mr. S. Ogg, ready to
set out by bus for a trip to Tor-
onto and the Royal Winter Pair.
Because of the length of time re-
quired for suelr a trip it was felt
that as -much as possible Should
be included so tours through Swift.
Canadian , Comp=any Limited and
Loblaws' warehouses were also ar-
ranged by 4. Stoner of the Agricul-
tural Dept.
Upon arrival in Toronto, Swift's
treated the entire group to a tasty
dinner of our choice. Thie was
followed by a 11/2 hour visit to the
slaughter floor, smoke houses, cut-
ting rooms. and refrigeration
roomq, etc. The complexity of pro-
cesses in the journey from stock-
yard to table certainly, helps to ex-
plain today'a 'high meat price.
Leblaws was the next stop on the
trip. ally. K. Carrutheia welcomed
the group eordially and c'on'ducted
u i through the huge building which
distributes to the 187 Ontario
groceterras. This tour included
'visits to the candy packaging room
(we could have all the samples we
wanted!), laundry, cheese and but-
ter - packaging department, egg
candling and grading rooms bake-
shop, etc., etc. The boys also en-
joyed touring the machine shop
and observing an electronic brain
(used to fill orders) in 'operation.
Refreshments and gift packages of
candy completed this most interest-
ing phase of the trip.
Xhe Royal Winter Pair afforded
many interesltin , spectacles includ-
ing the presentation of the Queen's
Guineas, Roosevelt's prize cattle
Arthur 4dfrey's horse, "Biondie,'3
and breathtaking Chrysanthemum
and rose displays. Time was also
available for the girls to travel by
streetcar to downtown Toronto to
see the Christmas decorations.
The grourp arrived home at 12.30
gam, tired but happy, and heartily
in favor of maleing' this trip an
annual GDCI event.

(Continued from page 1)
A request from Clinton Public
Hospital for at additional grant of
$6,000 was referred to the execu-
tive committee for a recommenda-
tion. The hospital is $12,604 short
of .meeting the ,bills for its building
and remodelling project. The
Clinton Hospital previously receiv-
ed $6,000 from the county for its
program.
Though the number of patients
at the County Home has increased
by ors-- hind, it is likely that costs
will be kept down to about the
same level as last year, Council
was informed by Mr. Erskine.
Council again received a request
that increases be made in the sal
aries of jail employees. The mat-
ter was referred to the executive
committee for a recommendation.
A letter, signed by Jail Governor
R. W. Bell and supported by Sheriff
Nelson Hill, suggested a general
25 -per cent increase.
The salaries now being paid to
county jail employees do not com-
pare favorably with laborer's wages
in Huron County, submitted Gover-
nor Bell. The risk is greater than
in most other occupations, he
stated.
The province, which pays ' 50 per
cent of the salaries of the jail em-
ployees, is agreeable to the pro-
posed increase, said the governor.
