It is the sea lamprey, aril Reel':)tikes n arauder that lives like a parasite on 'lake trout. The top photo shows how the sea lamprey kills or disables its victim by fastening itself to the fish's body with its sucker -like mouth. The picture below is a close-up of the lamprey showing its breathing holes and eyes. It has already wiped out commercial fishing in Lake Huron and' LAlte Michigan and is now threatening to do the same in Lake Superior. A research program is under way, by the Federal and Ontario governments aimed at controlling and eliminating the trout killer. About $250,000 has been alotted by these. SCHOOL BOARD REPEATS REASONS FOR SEEKING DEED OF OLD COLLEGIATE BUILDING Goderich Public School Board spending money on property which it -does not own. Noting that the board has also been asked by fire marshal's office to do something about the stairs in the old collegiate, he said, "We certainly don't want to do any- thing in premises that are not our own." Recent Accident Mrs.Edward said that insurance companies dislike the fact that the division of responsibility between the board and the Town Council is not clear, as she put it: The recent accident at the main public school building had brought the problem to. a ahead, she indicated. After the accident, provincial auth- orities painted out that the boiler in the old collegiate building was being operated "illegally" because it was neither inspected nor in- sured. Mayor J. E. Huckins assured her that the boiler has now been in - they have not been sufficient." sured by Town Council. le fact, Mr. Aberhart said he felt that he said, total insurance on the Old collegiate -has been increased from $50,000 to $100,000 in recent days. Mr. Aberhart assured Council that it need n worry about the board making e `+ nsive improve- ments to the bui ing should the 'board ,be given ownership. The board would make only necessary expenditures, he .said. He repeated the board's offer to sell the building .back to the tt%wn again sent a delegation to Town Council Friday night to ask that the deed of th-e old collegiate build- ing be turned over to the baa{{''d. After hearing the deleghtion, composed of Ch -airman Don Aber - hart and Mrs. C. Edward, Council took no inlmediate action but set the matter over to its next regular meeting. The old collegiate building ac- commodates :five public school classes this terra. On the last oc- casion that Council refused to give the board ownership of the build- ing, Athe board went on record as being "displeased." Addressing Council Friday night, Ma- Aberhadt stated: "We are not here tonight ,to plead with you. I think you know we would like to have the deed of the old col- legiate. We have given reasons from time to time, but apparently Council's repeated refusal to co- operate with the board's request may have put the board "in a rather bad light" with .the public. He asked Lf members of Council had some reasons for not wishing to transfer the deed to the board. He paused at this point, but mem- bers of 'Council did not mention ally reasons. Hotwever, Reeve J. H. G ra ha m asked Mr. Aberhart what was the board's reasons for wanting the once it is no longer required as a deed 'transferred. school. In Mr. Aberhart's opinion, "It's just for efficient handling the board will have to operate it of school board .business," replied as a school for a long time to come. Mr. Aberhart. He said it ,had been Mayor 'Huckins commented that brought to light recenttly that the it was fortunate that an earlier Ontario Department of Education Council had blocked a move to dis- does not approve of the board pose of the old collegiate building. There would have been an em- barrassing situation today if the town hadn't held onto the build- ing, he said. Agreeing, Mr. Aberhart said he had congratulated the mayor at the time and now wished to con- gratulate him again for foresight in retaining the building. 0 0 0 W.H.A.
