Smoker TRY OUR BUDGET PLAN all for only 295°° URNITURE its G•7 - WOMEN'S COLUMN BY MARY GUEST OWL EYES Comes summer and Goderich, like every other town in Canada, becomes owl -eyed. It stays that way until the dark days of winter. Somehow, Canadian eyes these days cannot 'bear sunshine, unless it is filtered through dark glasses. Result is that the populace hides behind stretches of colored glasses synthetic substance, until everybody strol- ling around the Square looks as solemn as an owl. And just about as handsome. The bare•headed fad is probably to blame. Nobody wants to wear a hat—not even a bald-headed Playboy whose topper gets burned red in the flrst five minutes. Back in Grandma's day, the girls cherished delicate pink and white complexions. So they shaded their faces with brimmed creations of milan straw or panama when they went downtown. Not for themthe fiery touch of the sun! But these days, tan's the vogue. A complexion approach- ing the color of tough old leather is the aim of every girl from four to forty. Even freckles are more prized than a flawless, milky skin. Minus 'a hat, eyes squint and wrinkles form. So, to shut out the glare, dark windows are hung over the eyes. And the loveliest girl strolling along looks as owl -eyed as the next one. That may be one reason why the whole world looks a bit dark these days. Even when the sun shines, `nobody sees green leaves, gold fields, blue lake, bright :Rowers, in their true colors. Shades are overcast with the sombre tones of the sun glasses. A whole generation is growing up without knowledge of colors as they actually exist in warm light. Unfortunately, a 'generation which cannot see the subtle shades of the world around home is not likely to be skilled at noticing beauty elsewhere. Perhaps it is time to start campaigning for a return to the old-fashioned sunbonnet. It shaded the eyes, but allowed the wearer to see the wonder of summer's treasure chest of color. Besides which, a sunbonnet was a heap more becoming to the wearer than two circles of darkness superimposed on a face. - KINGSBRIDGE KINGS&R11.>GE, August 13. — Joseph Martin, James Martin and S.
