steamships, which to date number 147.

A strange and terrible accident
oident took place Saturday at Montreal,
whereby a little girl, the seven-year,old
daughter of Zoteque Lafond, lost her
life. The child, with her sister, was
sitting on the doorstep of their father's
house, 256 St. Martin street, amusing
themselves by smoking cigarettes. The
clothes of the younger elle took lire
and she was so severely burned that she
died m about an hour.
Since the removal of the old street

At Dartmouth, N. S., Friday night a

not known how many more are left in

At the midsummer meeting ot the

which concluded on Friday, Harry
Wilkes and Rose Wilkes trotted an ex.

Wilkes won, trotting the second heat

Edward Holt, who lives in West
Wilton, N. H,, was taken insane on
Thursday night, and took his aged
father, Wallace Holt, from a sick bed
and pounded his tkoad to a jelly upon
the hearth. He then badly injured his
mother and aunt, while several neigh-
bors were injured while overpowering
him.
There are now about 13,000 miles of
railway in operation in Canada. nearly

A big fight is on among the Chicago
brewers. The battle is between the
English syndicate, who bought up
beverat of the larger breweries, and a
number of smaller breweries which
have not been taken Into combination
or have refused to become parties to
it. The reault of the fight up to Thura-'
day was a drop to the wholesale price
of beer. It is'believed the war will go
on until beer is sold leas than $3 per
barrel.
A few minutes before o'clock on
Sunday, at St, Paul, Minn., clouds
which had been threatning a storm be-
