TO W.M.IS. ON C'ONFERENCE,
Guest speaker at the May meet-
ing of the Women's Missionary So-
ciety of Knox Presbyterian Church
was Mrs. J. W. Thompson, of Sea -
forth. She brought an interesting
report on the Synodical Conference
held at Thorold recently.
Mrs. George Schaefer, president,
presided over the meeting. The
secretary, Mrs. R_..E. Wilson, read
an interesting letter from Rev. and
Mrs. Alex. MacDonald, now sta-
tioned with the Presbyterian Mis-
sion in. British Guiana. Mrs.
George Stokes, the treasurer, re-
ported sending $159. to the Press,
bytery Treasurer of Missions. The
blessing boxes were collected, and
the money they contained applied
to the supply allocattion. Plans
were made for the June meeting
which will take the form of an
outing to the home of Miss E.
Somerville at Meaford, followed
by an afternoon meeting at the
Presbyterian Church there.
The devotional exercises were
conducted by Mrs. Frank McAr-
thur, who read the Scripture read-
ing, I Samuel, Chapter III, followed

The guest speaker, Mrs. Thomp-
son, brought an interesting report
of the Synodical Conference held
at Thorold. The speaker mention-
ed 'the underlying deep spiritual
tone of the conference which had
as its theme "Now is the accepted
time." Mrs. Thompson stressed
the great need of work, money and
prayers for missions.
Mrs. George MacEwan expressed
the thanks of the members to Mrs.`
Thompson for her very entertain-
ing report, and also to the ladies
for their delightful vocal number.
After the meeting, tea was serv-
ed by the hostesses, Mr& _Frank
McArthur and Mrs. George Mac -
Ewan, and a happy social time
was enjoyed.

Hire Two Teachers
Adding Classroom
One teacher has resigned and
two more have been appointed for
the 1956-57 term by Goderich Sep-
arate School Board.
Miss Mary Lou McQuaid, who
has taught here for two years, is
leaving. The two new' teachers
are Miss Anne Stefer, of Brussels,
and Mrs. Jean Quigley, of London.
The board- is preparing to open
a fourth classroom in September
to relieve overcroWding. The room
now used as an auditorium will
be furnished for use as a class-.
room, the purpose for which it
was originally intended.
The avenge enrolment last year
was 126 pupils and the school ex-
pects the number to increase in
September.
GODERICIIDISTRICT COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

The Girls' Athletic Association 1
is an elected student body, organ-
ized to promote physical education
and foster athletic sports among
the girls of the school.
Under the capable leadership of
Beth Anstay, Shirley Bedard,
Sylvia Chisholm and Linda Breck-
enridge, all grade XIII students,
the organization accomplished
much in the 1955-56 school term.
Girls' athletic cards were sold to
° ° ° all girls in the school. This card
entitled each girl to certain priv-
ileges .regarding various school
functions and the funds received
from the sale, in addition to- those
received from dances sponsored
by the G.A.A., enabled the com-
mittee to pay for basketball ref-
erees, new uniforms for the senior
girls': basketball team, new cheer-
leader sweaters and crests and
entertainment and refreshments
for visiting school teams.
The program of athletics is divid-
ed into two groups — intramural
and extra -mural. The objective of
the intra -mural program is to pro-
vide competition open to all stud-
ents on an equal basis. It is de-
signed primarily for the student of
moderate ability in motor activ-
ites. Approximately 250 girls are
enrolled in the school and over
200 actively participated. The main
athletics featured were basketball
and volleyball. The tennis and

They farmed on the 9th conces-
sion of Hullett prior to moving to
Londesboro where they operated
the hotel and an implement busi-
ness and later moved to Clinton
and then to Goderich Township.
Her husband passed away in 1934.
Mrs. Cartwright had been a pat-
ient in the Stratford hospital for home -and -away series of six games,

One son died in infancy. There
are seven grandchildren. One blies

The funeral was at the Beattie
funeral home, 'Clinton, on Friday
afternoon with interment in the
Clinton cemetery.

FARM REPORT

Seeding was again delayed dur
ing the week of May 14 to 18 by
intermittent rainfall and snow on
May 16. With over five inches of
rainfall recorded to date for May,
ideal weather conditions would be
needed before seeding could com-
mence in another seven to 10 days.
Farmers are .busy making plans to
seed emergency crops and cash
crops to replace feed losses in=
.carred by not being able to seed
spring grains.

gratulations are in order for those

Receive Diploma
Miss Cora Doreen Driver, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Maitland
Driver, of R.R. 1, Goderich, re-
ceived her diploma at graduation
exercises of the School of Nursing,
St. Joseph's Hospital, London, last
week.
Present for the graduation cere-
mony, besides her parents, were
her
grandmother, other, Mrs. William
Driver, and her aunt, Miss Edna
Driver.
Following the ceremony a re-
ception was head at the Latin
Quarter where M.r. and Mrs. Driver
entertained in honor of their
daughter.
The dining room and tables were
decorated in the school colors,
yellow and white, and a three -
tiered cake topped with a minia-
ture nurse centred the table.
Guests attended from Goderich,
Clinton Hamilton, Stratford, Wood-
stock, London and Toronto.
The special - graduation day
spiaker was Most Rev. John C.
Cody, who stressed the important
role which nurses play in the re-
habilitation of society.

deserve to be congratulated for the
fine exhibition of skill and sports-
manship
displayed in all games.
The G.A.A. sponsored several
dances throughout the school year.
One dance, in --particular, "The ,
Sadie Shuffle," enabled the "gals"
to pursue the "gents." The at-
tendance at this dance was hir;i
and it was considered one of the,
most successful dances of the term.
Another year will soon be over.;
However, the "highlight" of the
