Classified advertising is the most popular feature of an Ontario
weekly newspaper, 30 Ryerson Institute practical journalism
students recently found in a door-to-door survey of Durham
county. The students tested the readership of the Canadian
Statesman, the weekly newspaper of Bowmanville, Ontario ,for
the Ontario Weekly Newspaper Association. Above is seen
Marta Kure, 21, Toronto, a Ryerson journalism etudent,' pre-
senting Wei'den Leavens, secretary -manager of the 'Ontario
Weekly Newspapers Association, with the results of a door-to-
door poll of 400 Bowmanville homes. Dr.,George James, editor
of the Bowmanville paper, explained that the appeal of the
classified was human interest. If someofte lists a baby carriage
for sale, he said, friends know they have stopped increasing
their family; or, if Mrs. Jones lists her dining room suite for
sale, friends speculate on the nature of her new furniture.

There's no denying, thcugh, that
:spring is time of resurgence of
life. There's nothing so heart -
'arming as the sight of the annuall
spring crop of babies, out on dis-
play' in the pram parade on the
first sunny day. Their slim young
mothers, who were girls just last
fall, have a new beauty and dignity
as they sail along three abreast,
pushing honest taxpayers into the
gutter.

Far our senior citizens, spring
is the most wonderful gift of all.
They have been dicing with death
all winter, and as the sun warms
their old bones, they know they
have won another toss, and a wel-
come respite, before they have to
pick up said bones and shake,
ratele and roll them again.

For the kids, there are drains to
make, boats tofloat, puddles to
wade through, ani:1 lovely mud that
squishes underfoot. Threats, or-
ders and imprecations from their
harassed mothers, trying to cope
with the annual flood of muddy
footprints and wet shirt-tails, have
no more effect than rain on a duck.

Fru' . the fanner, spring means
another nine months' of breaking
his back for peanuts. For the
sailor, it means leaving the wild
scramble of family Life for the com-
parative calm of rife or, the deep.
Fot the housevvife, it is a time to
attack the house like the Assyrian
voming down on the fold. For
young lovers; it is a time to act
even sillier than usual.

Whatever it means to us, and
even if it doesn't arrive until the
30th of June, to be immediately
transplanted‘by a hot summer, it's
the only thing that makes wor'h
while to battle our way throueh
the winter. The year spring Jails
