OPT ON, A LIMB
WITH BILL T-RY
Nothing burns a woman up like
the suggestion that perhaps she
isn't the fingers -to the bone type
of worker she claims to be. And
that's .a big statement, because an
awful loot of things burn a woman
up. But don't get me started on
that.

Trouble is, most men °swallow
then propagan I& They tome home
from work with their tails drag-
ging, and barely have their coats
off when the recital starts. Men
react in various ways to the aval-
anche of information on- every-
thing Mum did from the time she
got out of bed this morning.
* *
One -oaf the mast widely used
methods of survival is to paste an
interested look on your face, go
right on eatin your dinner, and
emit a repertoire of small sounds
indicating disbelief, approval, sym-
pathy, accompanied .bpi 'popping the
eyes if four 'mouth is full, wagging
your "head ,from time to time, and
shrugging your shoulders. This
gets you through the meal. But
then she says: "Why do you never
talk to "me?"

A second way of countering the
itemized account of the way she
got at that ironing right after
doing the beds is to say: "Oh, put
a sock in it. Who cares how long
it took you to wax the floors?"
This method is not recommended
unless your wife is paralyzed from
the waist down. Also up.
The more subtle and intelligent
eelproach, Ls one I 'have developed,
and which I am too noble -spirited
to hog to myself. It is to read
warrien's--magazines: Practical
every one of them these days con-
tains an article about how to hold
your husband. We must be getting
harder to hold.
* * *
For example, in recent weeks, I
have found a couple of dandies.
One is entitled: "Stop Boring Your
Htisband!" The second is "Are You
Exploiting Your Husband?" The
idea is to crease the magazine open
at the article, put some finger-
prints on it, and underline some
passages heavily, as though you'd
been reading it intensely. Then
leave the open magazine in some
place where she's likely to come
across it, like the 'bathroom or the
refrigerator.

Next step is to find a few murder
anysteries in which husbands have
habit of reading aloud to your
wife, in a jovial tone, the more
horrible methods of disposing of
wives. Start grinding up aspirin
tablets and dropping them into
glasses of milk as she enters the

This Week at Queen's Park
(By -Jamas Scott)
Health Insurance and the Budget
were in the spotlight in the Legis-
lature this past week.
By introducing the Hospital Ser-
vices Cosmnission Bill, Mr. Frost
made it clear to the House that
his government is by no. means
ready to present a Hospital Insur-
ance Plan to the province. As the
PrimeMinister explained it, his
government. seeks in this bill to
set up machinery to regulate the
allocation of grants to hospitals
and "to adminster any system of
hospital care insurance that may
be established."
In his explanation, Mr. Frost
took over an hour to explain the
results of a survey completed by
experts to determine what the cost
of a hospital-ca'rAe scheme would
,be. He felt these should be studied
further by the' Health Committee
of the Legislature and was not
prepared to bring in a hospital
care plan. ,
_....The. Leader of the Opposition,
Farquhar Oliver, charged that the
bill to set up a commission was
only another tactic to delay a hos-
pital -care plan. He asserted that
o ,y ser s was pTTenty 1511 -Time for
the government to take to decide
what it was ready to do and he
stated that his party's policy was a
demand for immediate action on
the hospital -care plan.
Earlier in the week, the Opposi-
tion's ',financial critic, John Winter-
meyer delivered a criticism of the
budget which members on both
sides of ,the House agreed was one
of the most detailedheard in the
Legislature in years.
Mr. Wintermeyer charged that

Fie' her with a piercing stare
Alien she stains taaking about
working so hard; ahd 'aTsk softly:
"Are.you really Unhanpy with your
life, dear?" This method is prac-
tically guaranteed to give her
something else to think about be-
sides what she told the milkman
when he left her too much change.
If she remains impervious, you
are- at liberty to hit her over the
head with an axe.
It's all very well for women to
talk about how hard they wonk
and what a state:their nerves are
in, from the continual pressure of
"kids, kids, kids!" But I for one
believe it for a minute.
If life Ls such a round of drudg-
ery, why are they so crazy to get
married? Oh, I know the answer
to that. It ,nfes: "I certainly didn't
know it was going to be like this.
You used to tall( to me about
everything. Now you just sit there
with your nose in the paper. Other
people's husbands tali( to them."
*
If the pressure is so terrific
and their nerves are so shot, why
is it you never hear of a woman
s with a stomach, ulcer? -Just an-
swer me that.
And finally, if -womea work so
hard that they're worn down to
the Ifingerbones, why is it that.
they live longer than men? Sta-
tistics show that women have an
avefage life expectancy of 70.83
years to men's 66.33.
Today's woman, if she is a fair
mechanic, has a life that would
make her grandmother green with
envy. Someboay else does her
baking. A machine does her wash-
ing. The milk and groceries are
delivered. She doesn't have to
pump water Or chop kindling. She
doesn't have to do any preserving.
She has so many time -saving de-
vices that she scarcely has time
to look af ter them all. And with
radio, television and telephone, she
doesn't have to suffer from the
worst plague of her grandrnother,
- Best thing the modern woman
could do is [admit she has a pretty
soft life. On top of all the me -
I chanioal aids that have removed
the drudgery frinn her life, she
has a husband who might think
that woman's place is In the bome,
but wouldn't dare say it out loud.
Come on, ladies, confess that you
never had it so good.
