THURSDAY, MARCH 15th, 1956 - Adverts g Rates on request THE GODERICH SIGNAL -STA THE BRITISH Tired of being kicked around here, there and almost everywhere, the British lion at last is showing his teeth. Having stood so much that his tormentors thought they need have no fear of him, he has roused himself and roared that he will stand no more. At any rate, he has turned on the rebels in Cyprus and raised a commotion that has restored some of his lost prestige in that part of the world. The action of the British Government in deporting Archbishop Makarios of the Greek Orthodox Church, the underground leader of LION . ROUSED WALKING y 1S G. Shoe manufacturers Would like to get people out. of their cars and on their feet and are asking the Government to do something to help them. What they want, of course, is to sell more shoes, but they can bring the medical fraternity to their support in claiming that people would be healthier if they did more walking. Representatives of the indus- try point to the ancient pastime of strolling in gardens and parks and ou the beaches beside the rippling waves, and urge the benefits of fresh air and exercise thus conferred. But if the trouble -makers in Cyprus, has been made an issue in Parliament, and Sir Anthony Eden has been assailed by the Opposition for committing what is termed an act of folly. A few days before they had attacked him for lack of resolu- tion and firmness in his foreign policy. If Sir Winston Churchill were still at the helm there would have been no such detraction, but Sir Anthony is considered fair game as a newcomer who has not yet proved himself. To override this opposition it looks as if he must stink to his guns and face whatever further trouble his decisive action may bring in its train. CLOD FOR YOU any Jack asks any Jill which she would pPefer, a walk or ride, you know what she would say. Scientists predict that future generations, travelling by automobile and airplane, will have discarded legs and will have no use for shoes. We don't see just what the Government can do to ward off this calamity, except, perhaps, by dtznying the benefits of the forthcoming national health measure to persons who are unable to exhibit a -useful set of props. IIowever, so long as -the shoe dealers enable customers to show a Nvell-shod pair of feet they will probably con- tinue in business. The heavy rain of over two inches on Tuesday of last week was bene- ficial, but the severe ice storm of Wednesday of last week knocked out hydro and particularly tele- phone services in some sections of the County. This coupled with a very had snow storm on -Thurs- day again blocked most ru*„1 roads. Consequently farm meg ings in the County were in many cases cancelled and otherwise poorly attended. ••NN•••••NN•••••••••t ®T's MID -- YEAR 'A phone in the kitchen makes it convenient for Mom td take or make calls without "dropping everything".
