E thought, as `he went his way. I don't. And II am sure there t.u•ust -be hundreds, thousands, nay millions of woine'. bike me in the world. Of course, I may say to Selena, when I meet her, "I just saw Maryann wearing a pink lig and.4he 3zc d-- ositiVely hideous in it," but this -couldhardly be Called gdssipit is either, a statement of fact or •a statement of opinion and I am entitled to voice either—if I want to be small-minded enough to do so. "Ah but," the man -would say, "If it's true and you must say it, why not say it to Maryann and do `solve good?" Now past yeui Iiow many women would relish being told that they looked hideous in a brand new hat? They would not believe you anyway, even if you did tell them. Come to that, how many times have you heard a man say to another man, "Have you seen Old So-and-so this morning? . Boy, he sure must have tied one on last night from the look of his face.. Old So-and-so probably would not appreciate that remark at all --particularly if hisface was the result of a touch of liver trouble, or more probably waiting up all night for his teenage offspring to get home from a dance. At some time or another, I suppose most of us have en- gaged in harmless chatter of this nature. Not in very good taste, perhaps, but not doing any real harm either—except to ourselves. E'_at—` evil and pernicious" said the man. Now that is where it ceases to be just idle gossip and becomes instead slanderous gossip: I cannot say from my own knowledge if there is any slanderous gossip in Goderich—or if so, how much of it there is, but -it has always been my feeling that where slanderous gossip does exist, the ' people, men or women, who engage in it hurt themselves more than they hurt anyone else. The old adage about mud -slinging is very true— you cannot throw 'mud without some of it stitking -to you. And there is- always the chance that you may do your slandering within earshot of your victim, and then the fat would be in the fire. You would find yourself in court so fast, you would wonder what had happened to you. I do not honestly believe that many women indult. in this sort of unpleasant behaviour. As to the suppition entertained by many husbands that their wives spe i long hours every day spreading gossip—this is utter non ' nse, as any housewife will tell you. In point of fact, a ihan's pro- pensity for gossip is about equal to that of his wife, but, according to the experts, *omentalk just about 25 per cent faster than men. They also hav much larger vd bularies.. So, , the next time your •husban ells you that you spend all your' time gossiping, you can fling his biological, inferiority at him --if you want to be that unkind. See you next week. `Fee Supper Held By ' Amour Circle The Arthur Circle of Knox Pres- byterian Church held their annual, Fee Supper on Monday in the Lecture Hall, when approximately 80 members and friends enjoyed a delicious meal, donated by mem- bers.
