CHRISTMAS BUYING
• While we have no statistics to support
the statement, we presume that in the three
weeks before CYristmas people spend as much
•as in any three months of the rest of the year
(fkalopting, of course, expenditure for food
and other necessaries that is constant through-
out the year),
. In the less active months, however, local
merchants have to keep their shelves filled
with a -great assortment of goods for the con.-
Tenience,of their custom`ers. It is reasonable,
therefore, for these local merchants to expect
that, having at great expense provided this
convenience for the people of town and dis-
trict, they should have first consideration in
Christmas purchases.
Soinbtimes the potential customer may
have an idea, that the local merchant has not
in stock just what he (or she) wants. - 0e-
easionally this may be so, ,blit it would be fair
to give him the first chance. He may have the
desired article, .and if not he may offer to
procure it fop S'Ou if you will givehim-a day"
or two.
At any rate, give the local merchant the
first chance. It will save you the trouble.. and
expense of sending your money to .the city
and perhaps getting something that does not
suit you at all. And it will help to build up
your own town, helpthat community spirit
that makes a town and district a fine place in
which to live.
Give the local merchant the first chance.

It is quite within memory when "tuber-
ettlosis-then commonly known as "consump-
tion" -was a sentence of death. The vietim
might through strength or utmost care pro-
long his days, but the end was sure. Then
medical science got to work in earnest to
attack the disease, with such success that,
even without transferring himself to a dry
climate, the consumptive might throw off the
affliction. Now, with preventive measures, im-
proved hygiene, and systematic inspection,
tuberculosis is almost wiped out. But not
quite -and the Christmas seal campaign of
the Huron County Tuberculosis Association
is designed to provide funds for the effort
towards the complete subjection of what was
once a dreadful scourge.
Buy Christmas seals.

The aphorism "noney makes money" is
amply illustrated in the land speculation,. going
on in the Toronto district. If Queen's Park
'mild give the Metropolitan authorities power
to collect a good percentage of the huge pro-
fits now going into private pockets from these
deals the city would not have tobe continually
going to the Government for financial assis-
tance. And this business of buying rand cheap
L NOTES
and selling it later at big prices •to land -hungry
people is creating real hardship in the increase
of rentals and in making it much more difficult
for yoUng couples to buy enough land on which
to build homes. Yet hardly a voice is raised
against the practice.

Mariners will get the point of this story
from Napier Moore's column in The Financial
Post. Down in the West Indies a native.boat
skipper took his son with him on a voyage to
Nassau. It was the lad's first trip. It was
dark as the sloop approached the coast of New
Providence and the captain was looking for
the Nassau harbor light, a flashing beam. • He
instructed his son to climb to the top of the
mast and holler as soon as he spotted the light.
At last, from up aloft came the cry. "Thar
she be. It's. lit! It's out! It's lit! It's out!
lit -if it goes out again it's no d- good!"

The Christmas meeting of the
W.M.S. of North Street United
Churel? was held in the Sunday
School room on Tuesday afternoon
jut. It Was opened by the reciting
ora Christmas poem Icy the presi-
dent Mrs. Harold Turner, who also
offered prayer after a hymn had
been sung. The usual:reports were
read and adopted and 54 calls on
the 'sick and .shut-ins were report-
ed. There was some discussion re-
garding the raising of the alloca-
tion.
The motions made and carried
were: "That a Christmas tree be
purchased and a donation of $2.00
for treats be given the Mission
Band for their Cluistmas -party;
also that a conation of $5.00 be
made to the flower fund. The
matter of merging the W.M.S. and
W.A. into one. society named the
Women's Federation was brought
forward by Mrs. Mathieson and dis-
cussed at some length. A letter
from -Mts. Moores, branch presi-
dent, stated that the meeting of
the Lolidon Women's Conference
Branch is to be held in North
'Street United Church on April 17
and 18. In the absence of Mrs.
A. R. Scott, Mrs. Turner took
charge of the devotional period.
The Christmas program outlined
in the November Missionary
Monthly was followed throughout.
The Bible readings were taken by
Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Vhfcent, ,Mrs.
Maskell, Miss Strang, and Mre.

by the singing bf Christmas carols.
