St. Nicholas, attired as a bishop,
makes a- triumphal entry, into the
city, mounted' on a white charge,
as he was supposed to have done
many years ago. He is a benign,
but austere character, with white
beard flowing and mitre and golden
staff held aloft. Black Peter, his
Moorish page boy, tosses out Dutch

F,rrmv England comes ,truth of.:
the color and tradition so evident
in the Newfoundland Christmas.
The 12 days of Christmas signific-
antly includes all celebrations" of
the famous festival.
In the coastal towns and village's
or the "outpbrts," as they are often
called,,, much of the pre -Christmas
preparation takes : place in the
kitchen. Christmas cakes and pud-
dings and a specialbatch *of sweet
raisin bread are ready to serve
when guests drop in. Christmas
dinner is a' family affair, with the
menu very similar to our typical.
"turkey and plum pudding" meal.
A, Christmas night stfuare dance
ooncludes the' day's activities in
many small communities.
Boxing Day, December 26, often
features a sale of works by one
of the .eluirch organizations. A
community super is served, fol-
lowed by danng, darts, cards and
others ,games. ,
From Christmas to Epiphany,
the traditional mummers (usually
children and young people) go
from hoarse to house. Dressed in
strange costumes and masks, with -
voices disguised, they sing or recite
for re -wards of apples, candy, syrup
drinks. and 'Christmas cake, pur-
crha'se•d in this day and age from
the local baker.
On the Twelfth Night, parties
begin in, the evening, and before
the night is over, 'the Christmas
tree and greens are taken down
and burned, to avoid,µ,according to
legend•, the -misfortune- that may
befall those who leave them -up
after Old' Cihrisrts'nas Day.

traditions of their native Ukraine.
By the Julian Calendar, Christ-
mas falls January 7. -Celebrations
are religious in nature and centred
around the home. . Every member
of a family tries 'to be home for
Christmas Eve supper. If this isn't
possib1‘ their place at the table
is still .set 'so they will be remem-
bered by the family.
January 6 is a day of preparation
and fasting. The tree is dressed
and a sheaf of•.wheate symbolizing
the Holy Spirit, is brought into the
house. The feast table is covered
with a•.whi'te cloth, and bits of hay
are sprinkled under the cloth: The
table ;centrepiece is made of stems'
of wheat, braided to :form a wreath;
A special "Kolach" bread in. , the.
'form. of a twisted braid, is placed
ins the centre of the wreath, mad

placed on or beside the loaf, are
lighted as the first evening star
appears in the sky. This signifies
the arrival of Svyata Vech'er ,(Holy
Eve) and after family ;prayers the
fast is over and the feastbegins.
r11we'lve eatless dishes, in, honor
of the 12 apostles, make up the
Christmas Eve supper. Perhaps-
the most traditional of -these, and
one that is eaten once a year, is
"Xutia," a porridge -like wheat•d•ish,
Made 'of boiled wheat kernels and
poppy seeds, sweetened with
honey.

Gellman Canadians; like ;most of
our ' newer citizens, celebrate a.
.Christmas that clings to homeland
customs, 'but accept many, modern
day influences and ideas:
Until the fifth century, Christ-
mas in Germany wii"s not celerbrat-

though the day- of celebration has
been changed, St. Nicholas remains
as the patron saint and secret giver
of children's gifts.
Church , services are attended
faithfully on Christmas Eve, usual-
ly preceded by a fish dinner, plenty
Of coffee and decorating of the
Christmas tree with fancy cookies
and candles. .
.-German families visit back and
forth and always there are refresh-
ments—coffee, Christmas stollen,
rye ,bread and cheese, and an end-
less
ndless variety of small cakes ,and
cookies. , .
"Christmas dinner is a gay and

In riiost .parts'of. Manitoba. now,
Christmas celebrations" are typical-
ly Canadian. There is,a , quaint
blend of lavish. old British tradi-
tion - with pioneer hardship ' and
austerity., One of the' mopt excit-

in the Red River- country is the
family shopping expedition to Win-
nipeg. Its highlights probably mir-.
ror closely the pre-Ohristanas ex -
cursions to cities .and towns by
store -hungry rural. Canadians
-everywhere.
There are toys and gifts and
stroking supplies to be chosen with
care. There's a new dress or a
pair of winter pants to be selected
for each child. But probably the
most exciting and -mouth-watering
of the entire d'ay's experiences is
-the time spent in the 'grocery and
food department of the large- de-
partment store.
