'Bottle clubs are getting to' be
noisy, drunken joints," Magistrate
D. E. Hohnes warned in court here
last Thursday, adding that the only
way to stop' rowdyism was through
fines and jail terms.
He issued the warning after reg-
istering a conviction against Nor-
man Hamilton, proprietor of the
Crystal Club„ north of, Goderich at
Dunlop. Hamilton was fined $75
and, costs or 30 days.
He had been charged as the re-
sult of a raid by Provincial Police
on September 3 and his convic-
tion was the fourth against bottle
club proprietors in the Goderich
area in the past couple of months.
Hamilton had pleaded not guilty
when he first appeared on the
charge last month.
At that time, the court held a
hearing, to determine whether a
search warrant for the raid ' had
been made out properly. The
magistrate ruled the warrant was
valid and for the past few weeks
the case had been adjourned.
Given Remand
When he appeared last Thurs-
day, Hamilton was at first remand-
,
ed to jail for a week by the magis-
trate after entering a not guilty
plea again. •Crown -.Attorney H.
Glenn Hays told the court, that he
had understood Hamilt4 had in-
timated he would change his plea
to one of guilty. As a result; the
Crown Attorney said he was not
prepared to proceed with the hear-
ing.
At the, same time, Defence Coun-
sel Frank Donnelly asked permis-
sion to withdraw from the ease.
At the close of the court, how-
ever, when Hamilton indicated he
had decided 'to change his plea,
the magistrate decided to hear the
case.
Hamilton then pleaded guilty.
Crown Attorney Hays noted that
it was the first conviction against
the Crystal Club, but he said that
at the time of the raid there had
been little pretence of operating
within the law.
Beer seized in the raid was ord-
ered confiscated and destroyed.

ALASKA'S GIANT Kodiac bear
plays rough. But the people who
run the'Bronx Zoo have found
the perfect toy forhirn. It's an
aluminum beer barrel, which in
his playful moments he can
bang, bounce and generally
maltreat without serious dam-
age. Having seen barrels (filled)
being tossed around trucks, we
can understand why breweries
have turned to these rugged,
attractive containers. Another
reason, of course, is that alu-
minum is an excellent protector
for food and drink, preserving
their purity and flavour indef-
initely. Company of
