MA14Y TREES PROVIDE ,COLORING IN AUTUMN Many people correctly credit the sugar maple with the brilliant coloring seen in the fall. There are other speecde+s that Kidd to this coloring awl several color weeks earlier than the sugar iaple. ' The red maple turn a brilliant red along the middle of Septeanber and they are followed soon by the white ash, which has a bronze coloring: The hickory are yellow and they color before the sugar maple. • Another species that has bril- liant coloring later in the fall, and wlidh has an advantage that the leaves stay longeit' on the trees, is the red oak. The leaves of this species turn a brilliant red. It will grow any place in Southern Ontario, although it is not dis- tributed generally and there are sections where it would be im- possibleto find. There are sev- eral species of shrubs that also color early and they are found growing in all parts. There are two species of dogwood, the blue beech and sumach. Potatoes that had been grown in soils treated with chemicals to kill •wireworms did not pick up , or ab- sorb sufficient' of the chemicals to have any effect on rats to which the potatoes_wpre fed. "• Experiments were undertaken at the Entomology Laboratory, Cha- tham, in 1951 to develop satisfac- tory methods of controlling wire - worms ' attacking potatoes. Their tests ' included treating the soil in a series of plots with aldrin, chlor- dane, dieldrin and heptachlor at a rate of five pounds of actual in- secticide per acre. Potatoes grown on these plots , were then fed to rats by the Anim- al Pathology Division, Hull, Que., to determine whether they. carried any residues of .these' insecticides that 'would be .injurious to the' rats. Potato washings, " peelings and out • r and centr portions of the tubers were each fed to, groups of six rats, including control groups which received identical quantities of potatoes graven on untreated soil. At the conclusion of a 115 to 123 day feeding .period,._ none of the experimental animals showed symptoms of toxic effects from any of the ,four insecticides and it was concluded that under the' condi- tions onditions of this experiment residues of aldrin, chlordane, diedrin or heptachlor; if any, on or in the potatoes did not affect the .health of the animals. Post inortern ex- amination of their organs showed no changes due to any toxic actior6 of the insecticides. ere peopte" are helping to ht meaty a pew shopping eentroe4 f.gl ower plant or other uaeftl! prof G•i/in,,*( ce laols al:'c -.from the premiums they pay it thein in ways that help Mance like these. rsry^,yw .. • During his visit• to the lst Canadian Infantry Brigade in Germany, the Minister the Hon.
