.�., Goderich, when he was con-
victell on a charge of keeping
liquor for sale, contrary to the
anada Temperance Aet, before
Magistrate D. E. Holmes, in court
here last Thursday.
Simmons was charged as oper-
. ator of "Club 21" `0n No. 21 High-
way south of Goderich. He plead-
ed not guilty. '
Ronald Young, Clinton taxi driv-
er, told the court that on April 29
he had taken six air force person-
ae', three men and three women,
to he club. He said he belonged
to the club and had previously paid
a $2 membership and $6 for a case
of beer. After joining the club,
.he said, he paid $3 for a ticket re-
presenting 12 bottles of beer and
the money was to apply to purchase
Of another case.

Young' admitted that on April
29 he had signed a blank order
form, paid $33 and got a ticket. An
order form dated May 1 and bear-
ing 'Young's signature was submit-
ted by Crown Attorney H. Glenii
lays in evidence and showed that
48 cases of beer had been ordered
in Young's name.
Young said that .when he took
the air force personnel to the club
on April 29, one of them had given
him $3. He admitted that the
Passengers were actually drinking
his beer at the club.
Alex McPhail, one o`.f` the airmen
said he had one bottle of beer at
the club and claimed he bought a
bottle of whisky from Simmons for
$6. 'Young said he was standing
at the club's bar during thetime
the airmen were in the building
but he did not witness any sale of
liquor. Another airman, Jack El-
liott, said McPhail produced the
bottle of liquor in the taxi after
leaving the club, but he also did

Honey Crisp Coffee Cake
One and a half cups sifted flour,
2 tsps. baking powder, 1 ts.p. salt,
cup shortening, 1/3 cup sugar,
1 egg, 2'3 cup milk, 1 cup sugar
coated corn flakes, 3 tbsps. soft
butter, 1.a3 cup honey, 1/4 cup
shredded coconut, iia cup drained
crushed pineapple.
Sift together flour, baking pow-
der artd salt. Blend shortening and
sugar; add egg and beat well. Stir
in sifted dry ingredients alter-
nately with milk, being careful not
to overnix. Spread in greased 9x9 -
inch pan. Crush sugar coated corn
flakes slightly. Blend butter and
oney; stir in shredded coconut,
neapple and crushed corn flakes.
Spread over batter. Bake in mod-
erately hot oven (400 degrees F.)
about 35 minutes. Yields: 9 3 -inch
squares.

Provincial Constable John Park-
-inson, of the Goderich detachment,
told the court of obtaining the
order forms submitted as evidence
from brewer's warehouses in'Strat-
ford and Thedford.
Simmons, in his evidence, denied
that any of the air force men had
been near the bar at any time and
that he had sold liquor to McPhail.
He was represented by J. K.
Hunter.
In registering the conviction,
Magistrate Holmes said there was
reasq,nable doubt about whether
whisky had been sold by the ac-
cused, but that there was no doubt
he had been keeping beer for sale.
A second charge, bringing liquor
into Huron County, was adjourned
until J.uly.8.

Sarnia, was fined $15 and costs by
Magistrate D. E. Holmes here last
week on a charge of disturbing the
peace by.being drunk. Chief Con-
stable F. M. Hall told the court
that the accused had been arrested
at a local hotel where he had
been causing a disturbance.' He
had been released on bail.
