Jehn Ryan, local blacksmith,
rang the old fire bell with
daily time signals at 7 a.m.,
The first call was, an urge to

were already out of bed and
doing chores by that time.

Some time aho, citizens be-

in making the annual "gift"
to the bell ringer.
But Mr. Ryan, though no
sign of remuneration was in
the offing, faithfully rang the
•bell Morning, ,noon and night,
even though \ the rope had .
rotted and broke and had to
be replaced with a mended
piece of rope.
Now, apparently the bell has
been outdated: It doesn't ring

miss the sound of its peal
