IECALLS F1RST .LOG NOME
• By Gavin M. Green
As tact travel through the sous
try in your automobile upon the
Queezi'b highway. and notice an old
log building with the doors and
windows gone., and cattle. sheep.
pigs, ducks, geese and hens having
the right-of-way through it—unless
you are near the threescore years
or of a romantic turn of ..find you
are likely to pass at by without
giving it a second glanv-e. This
old" log building was once the
horn of pioneers.
What lessons might We'
we could see the panorama of
pioneer life of which it was the
centre. from, the day the pioneer
entered it with his bride. until the
day he bade it farewell as he
moved into his Second house. of
frame..brick or stone. and the o'd
log house was turned over to the
beasts of the field and the fowl of
the air.
Pioneer's Ca #Ie

once the home and castle W a
pioneer family, 1 Was born:.but it
is gone. and there is nothing left
of my birthplace but a hole in the
ground which- did duty as a cellar
.under the house. 1 lived in tins
old house until 1 was 11 year of
age. It was just a common log
house. a storey .and a half high.
with one door and two •window"..
and only a hoard partition between
my parents' bed and the other.,
called the spare bed. The rest of
the house was -kitchen: dining
room, parlor combined. Yes, there
was • an upstairs. and the stair-
way -was a ladder made of two
cedar poles nailed to the logs with
cleats for steps. We children slept
upstairs, boys at one end of the
room, girls at the other.
Some cif the more aristocratic
log houses had hunks for the girl,
to deep in which folded up in the
daytime and did duty as chester-
fields.
I slept very nicely upon a ".shake-
down,' inieh was s •.:ck
with straw.
Some of the pioneer houses were
built of logs squared or 1lattenej
on two. sides and were two atorea.s
high. with a real stairway, and
hoard partitions to make separa-'.
rooms. Our v!d souse had Just he

whether the bedbugs got upstairs
or not. -but I think they stayed
downstairs. as they liked the, old
fourpo-ter rope bed to play around

With all its fault` the old lo;;
house was a cozy- corner in winter
Some of the better class of houses
had a fireplace tat one end. built of
stone or prick., with a large chim-
ney and brick, bake oven at the
side' for the baking of bread, cake'.
pies and the roasting of meat'
Great strings of hams, sides of
bac' n, strings of dried apples and
pumpkins cut into strips for the
making of pies, could be seen hang-
ing from the beams in these better -
class houses. tai ' our old uas
we had a high oven called the
"Clinton Airtight." and with fol,
of wood on a cold night in winter
the old stove .was usually- red-hot
on top.
