Hearing of .a charge of careless
driving against Clayton Laithwaite,
of R.R. T, Goderich, was adjourned
by Magistrate D. E. Holmes, Q.C.,
in police etiurt last week until
January 7, 1954. ' '
Laithwaite was charged- as a re-
sult of a collision between a car
driven by him and a bicycle driven
by 14 -year-old Ted Turner, of
Goderich, on the Huron road on
October 24.
Turner suffered a fractured left
leg and fractured thigh as a result
of the accident. Crown Attorney
H. Glenn Hays, Q.C., told the court
that the yotith would likely be in
hospital until about Christmas. J.

all members present, and also the
county assessor, A. -Alexander.
Lloyd Sowerby was granted a re•
duction of $50.00 for bush exemp-
tion. James Sturdy was granted
a refund on taxes for a barn burn-
ed and also lowered $150.00, which
includes $50.00 for bush exemp-
tion John Wain was granted.I

sessment of D. Hendricks was low-
ered $100. G. Parsons was granted
a refund of taxes on one parcel of
land. E. J. Trewartha was grant-
ed a refund of taxes on, buildings.

day of the unveiling of a plaque
commemorating John Wilson Ben•
gough, the first Canadian cartoon-
ist to gain international reputa-
tion.
The plaque, unveiled at historic
Mackenzie House, was the second
in Canada to honor a journalist.
The first was placed beside the
South street entrance to Huron
County Court House in Goderich
commemorating Sir John Stephen
Willison.
The plaque at the Court House
reads: "Sir ' John Willison, K.B ,
journalist; -author and -publicist.
Editor of The Globe, 1890-1902 and
of The News, Toronto, 1902-1910.
Born at Hill's Creek, Huron Coun-
ty, 9th November, 1856. pied in
Toronto, 27th May, 1927." It was
erected by the Historic Sites and
Monuments Board of Canada.

requesting that a by-law be passed
to eliminate or control unnecessary
noise on the Square at night. The
request pointed out that it did not
refer to civic celebrations, but

especially after midnight. Conn-,
cil referred the petition to Town
Solicitor J. K. Hunter to determine
