A NUMBER of ancient English
churches are replacing their
equally ancient roofs with alumi-
num. One of these is the Chapel
of St. James in the village of
Nether Warton, Oxfordshire. Its
lead roof, originally laid iq 1665,
brought £478 as scrap — enough
to pay the whole cost of installing
the new roof.
It is a neat example of 'how,
while most metals have been get-
ting more expensive through the
centuries, the cost of aluminum

Friday night dance held in the
parish hall. The next dance will
be held on October 23.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Murray and
sons, of Detroit, spent the week-
end here with relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman O'Connor
and daughter, Patricia, visited
with relatives in Detroit last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kinney have
returned to Detroit after spending
the summer months at their home
here.
Miss Florence Lambertus has
returned to Hamilton after a two-
week visit at her home here.

ning his annual chicken supper
for the first Sunday in November
at St. John's Church, North Woods -
lee, Ontario.

HOLMESVILLE, Oct. 14. —Sgt.
and Mrs. Al. Parker and family,
of Aylmer, were recent guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Les. Jervis.
Mr. and Mrs. Roland Gerig and
sun, of Oshawa, were Thanksgiving
guests of Mr. and Mrs. P. ,Palmer.
Mr. and Mrs 11. M. Bezeau sad'
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bezeau, of
Kitchener, were guests of Mr. and
Mrs: Frank McCullough on Sunday.
Holmesville United Church ob-
served the 74th anniversary of the
church, on Sunday. Rev. 11. C.
Wilson, minister of the Wesley-
Willis-Holmesville circuit, was in
charge of both morning• and even-
ing services, which were largely
attended. The church was beauti-
fully decorated with baskets of
Autumn flowers, and the windows
had small vases of tiny mums as
a decoration. In the morning, a
women's choir was enjoyed, and
during the anthem the solo parts
were taken by Miss Sandra Wil-
liams, Mrs. William Norman and
Mrs. Edward Grigg. Mrs. Roland
Gerig, of Oshawa, sang as a solo
y Heart Be Ever Joyful," and
Mrs. Bill Cox, of Porter's Hill, sang
"I Walked Today Where Jesus
Walked." Mrs. Nelson Brown, of
Detroit, Mich., accompanied the
soloists on the organ, and Mrs. W.
Yeo was organist for the rest of
the service. At the evening ser-
vice, the Men's Choir of Wesley-

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Boyd, of

the former's father, Charles Boyd.
A large reception was held at
Reed's Corners Monday evening in
honor of Mr. and Mrs. James Brad-
ley, who weremarried recently.
Some improvement in the health
of Will MacGregor, who is a pat-
ient in St. Joseph's Hospital, Lon-
don, is. reported.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald R. Mac-
Kenzie with Mr. and Mrs. Mel-
ville Scott were on a motor trip
to Northern Ontario the past week.
