The Meaford win left the Knights far ahead in first Maybe Charlie Justice has some- thing when he says Norm Bagnall is the best Fastball pitcher in Canada. Bagnall fanned nine batters and allowed only five hits as`Kincardine grounded the Goderich Flyers 2-0 in a WOAA Fastball League tilt Wednesday night of last week at Agricultural Park. Justice, on the mound for the losers, pitched a good game, fan- ning six and allowing. fight safe- ties. Each team committed one error. The Kincardine crew started the scoring in the first inning when Fulford and Bell, the first two batters, rapped out singles. Justice struck oat the next two, then Bill Polosky slammed a double to drive in the " tally, Newt Cuyler flied `out to retire the side. Kincard- ine's second run came in the seventh. Goderich • had a rough first in- ning which seemed to be an in- dication of how the rest of the game would go for • the locals. Pinder, the first batter, flied out. Justice had three balls pitched to him, swung at them all, and struck out. Willis, the third batter, fol- lowed the same routine as Justice. Beacom managed to get to third in the fifth inning, and Justice got las far as second in the sixth. The game was marred once again by several arguments over d.ecis- i ions of Umpire Hughie Cummings, of Lucknow. At one stage of the contest Cummings threatened to throw a bench -riding Kincardine player out of the game. Batteries—Bagnall and Polosky; Justice and Miley. With the postponed games that are left to play, there .could be a decided change m the standings but only as far as Goderich, Walk- erton and Kincardine are con- cerned. Lucknow and Port Elgin had their hopes of reaching playoffs doused last week when they lost games, and Hanover remains far deep in the cellar, far out of any possible contention. Meaford, the pace -setting team, has won 21 games and dropped only eight so far this season. Walkerton has 16 wins and 11 losses while Goderich has 18 wins and 13 losses. Kincardine has won 18 and lost 15,E The Flyers will have -a chance to redeem themselves when they play against the Knights here again on Friddy night. If Tuesday nightAs game is any indication, the contest should be a thriller. Meaford, a powerhouse squad at the plate and sharp in' fielding, will be out for another win and Goderich will be trying vainly to get back in second spot in the standings and consolidate them- selves there. The game will be the final sche- duled one here, although there are still a couple of postponed ones left. Next Monday. Walkerton , will beyhere and on Wednesday the Flyers will play host to Port Elgin. Following the the standings not including last . night's games: P. W. L. Pct. Meaford 29 21 .8 ..724 Walkerton 27 16 11 .592 Goderich . 31 18 13 .580 Kincardine 32 -18 15 .562 Lucknow _ .29 11 18 .379 Port Elgin 30 11 19 .366 Hanover .27 8 19 .296 Sports With the end of the schedule in sight and only a few postponed games left, it can safely be said now that Goderich will definitely be in the WOAA Major Fastball playoffs. The other three teams in the semi-finals will be Meaford. Kincardine and Walkerton, but just where the four teams will end up at the end of regular . play is something only a crystal ball gazer could predict --and then he might be .wrong. By the looks of things, Meaford will likely end up in top position. The Knights have played heads -up ball all season and will prove tough opposition for the team that will be pitted against them in the semi-futals. Lucknow and Port Elgin were knocked out of any hope of a playoff position as a result of Monday night's 'games. The Leg ionnaires bowed to Goderich 2-1 wheh Charlie Justice came through with' a stellar two -hitter. And in Meaford, the Knights battered Port Elgin Pontiacs 6-1 to eliminate the chances of the Lakeport town boys. So now, it's between Goderich, Kincardine and Walkerton to de- termine who win! meet the power- ful . Meaford Knights.. Ott Monday night Walkerton kpocked off the Kincardine crew by a score of 5-3 to jump into third position. But the three teams are so` close to one another it's impossible to pre• dict any future changes in the standings. Playoffs are slated to get underway September 2 with the top team in the standing against ,the third-place crew and the second team against the fourth. A deal which could have brought some high-calibre hockey to Gode- rich in the next couple of weeks fell through over the weekend, when Eddie Shore decided against bringing his Syracuse and Spring- field International League teams here for four weeks of, intensive training. It's not known where Shore has decided to take his teams, but he wired-- local officials over the week -end to say he wasn't coming here. Plans were to leave the ice in the arena after the figure skaters had gone and the teams could take over sometime toward the middle of September. Still on the hockey scene (even though it's still summer), local hockey officials are said to be out looking for talent for this year's intermediate hockey entry. They realize that now's the time ,to get the good players. In a few weeks they will be all snapped up by other clubs. On to baseball, and congrats to the Goderich bantams' for their fine showing on Monday night. The local kids took the measure of the St. Marys team 26-11 and won the WOAA Bantam Baseball League finals. The tads won the best -of -three series 2-0 with one game tied. It was, a rough first inning for St. Marys on Monday night as 21 Goderich batters faced three pitchers. The bats were booming and the locals collected 16 runs. LADY BOWLERS PLACE THIRD AT STRATiFORD The Stratford Ladies' Club held their "Faill Trophy" tournament on Wednesday afternoon and even- ing of last week. Mrs. 'Ada Broad- ley, Mrs. Marion McLeod and Mrs. Jean Price won third prize in this event. On Thursday evening on the loom greens winners were: 1. P. Bisset, Mrs. Helen Allison; 2. A. O. VICTORIA STRZET Towns= GERRARD'S BEAT DRI ECO, VETS WIN Gertards exploded in the sixth inning for six runs, to _come from behind to defeat Dominion Roads 9-5 in - the first game- of a double- header Goderich Industrial League softball fixture at Agricultural Park on Monday night. The big blow was a grand slam home run to the right field with the bases loaded by Jack Evans, first baseman for the winners. The victory consolidated Gerrard's hold on top place in the league. Mc- Lean and Willis for the winners and Cundari and Allin for DRMCO were the losers. In the second tilt. The Canadian Legion crew poured on the pres- sure' to humble last year's champ- ions, Purity Flour Mills, 20-5. Smith and Mero handled battery chores for the Legion while Maybond and McCue made up, the Flourmen bat- tery. Next Monday night will see play- offs begin in the league. Crowds have been small, so get, out and cheer. the home tears. • 4 Make - Survey For More Rental Names An indication that rental accom- iodation is "Mill in demand in Goderich, town officials report that 10 applications for rental homes have been received so far in a survey being made by town coun- cil. The council feels that there is a need for more rental housing in town and has made forms available at the Town Hall for those in- terested. Persons with families having a gross family income iiof not -less than $150 per month and need better housing accommodation ha,re been asked to fill in the storms. Earlier this year. the town ob- tained 25 rental homes through the dominion -provincial -municipal plan. All these homes have now beetl occupied and the present survey is to deterinine how many more homes may be needed. An advertisement In the Signal - Star brings results.
