Faithful attendance at practice sessions during the winter months under the capable direction of their bandmaster, Don Jolly, paid off. Visiting on Manitoulin Island last week we took time out to attend a political meeting at the little village of Manitowaning, ad- jacent to the large Indian reserva- tion of Wikwemikong. Addressing the meeting was "Mike" Pearson, who represents Algoma East in the Federal House. Having taken lec- tures in Constitutional history from "Mike" when we were a student at the :University of . Tor- onto some years ago we wanted to see if his style of delivery had changed any in the intervening years. He stepped out and leaned against the front of the' village hall stage, speaking in the same carefree, informal manner as of old. He talked not as a great states- man but just as one of the boy's telling his constituents what was going on in the world at large. As President of the United Na- tions Assembly, "Mike" Pearson told his electors at Manitowaning, just two days before his official nomination at Espanola, for the forthcoming election, what went on at the United Nations. He confessed he would be "vastly re- lieved" when his term of office as president of this world-wide or- ganization would officially termin- ate in September. In simple lang- uage he, told of the headaches, troubles and difficulties connected with the gigantic task of direct- ing the Assembly. There was no doubt in the minds of anyone pre- sent of the overwhelming troubles experienced by "Mike" , as presi- dent of the United Nations. No doubt on art of anyone until Chief Andrew Trudeau of Wikwemikong Indian Reservation was called upon to say a few words.. Chief Trudeau, said he didn't know why he was asked to speak because be didn't know so much English and he didn't understand the white man's poli- tics. Ile wanted the white man speaker to know that maybe they did have a few troubles at this meeting he was talking about but the troubles were just peanuts compared" to the troubles experi- enced as chief of an Indian Re -1 servation. Chief Trudeau said that since he had been appointed Chief last September, he had heap big troubles—criticism, misunder- standing, work and arguments. No, the white man Pearson might have had a few ;troubles but they were small birds in comparison to the Chief's troubles. "Mike" smiled graciously as the Indian Chief talked, obviously re- cognizing ,in. the Chief's remarks a world wide feeling—whether it. pertained to a country, an organ- ization or an -individual, each felt that his or their particular troubles were the greatest in the world. But "Mike" is liked by the In- dians. Chief Trudeau says this white man has shown the Indian YOUR Auto Radio HEADQUARTERS Sales and Service llutchinson Radio Phone, 4968 ' Huron Road Coming Events Bazaar, bake sale and tea, spoil - servo uy Knox Church Ladies' Aid Order Shell furnace oil and stove on Thursday, June 18, at 3 pan, oil from Edward Fuels, tank truck In the lecture hall ot Knox Pres- dealer for all Shell Oil Co. pro- bytertan Church. -24 ducts. Pearson related how television at tne United Nations Assembly has done away with wnat used to be termed Mine iniquity of secret dlploinacy." He ueptoreo, how- ever, tne tendency to sensational- ism on the part of those who televised the meetings. Always, tetevisuig programs wnen there is a rough session going on such as V istunslty, the ttussian delegate, talking (luring a stormy session. Tins, ne said, gave the impression to tne public tnat all sessions of the United Nations were full of argument which, he said, was not so. He pointed out they never televised quiet committee meetings at which much was accomplished. Because of ' publicity through television, Pearson said he receiv- ed much fan mail. He told.of one woman from New Jersey who wrote in to advise him to "look more 'dignified and trot like a bored undergraduate; to stop knocking away at your tonsils with your eye glasses all the time." Pear- son warned that -when sessions of Canada's House of Commons would be televised in the non too distant future it would bring "a serious development to Canada." "Get strong; be patient and not easily provoked" is the best policy for the United Nations to pursue for future success, Pearson stated. PERSONAL HUSBANDS! WIVES! WANT PEP?
