ON THE SQUARE
AND ..'..HERE AND THERE
Rumors have it that a branch
of a bank not now located in-
Goderich is seeking to locate here
in order to service the new Sheaf
-
ter industry. It is said they are
seeking a location on the Square.
A lady from Lynden, Ontario,
writes to say she visited Goderich
about two weeks ago and couldn't
find the hotel she once stayed at
in the 20's. Said its name startel
with an "M" and was just north of
Goderich. We hasten to explain
the Menesetung Hotel was burned
down quite some years ago.
If the Signal -Star adopted the
same slogan as that of a weekly
newspaper in a western United
States town it would read some-
thing like this: "The Signal -Star,
the only newspaper published in
the area of and giving a d ---
about the welfare of the town of
Goderich and the townships of
Colborne, Ashfield, Godvich and
West Wawanosh."
"Small towns all over Ontario
are looking with jaundiced eyes
on those places fortunate enough
to attract new industries," says
the Mt. Forest Confederate. After
talking with officials of the firm
which will construct the plant for
Goderich's new industry we came
to realize there are many towns
being surveyed with a view to
new industay Nod theSe surveys
are going on coMplietely unknown
to the towns. All Srts of inform-
ation is gathered abit them and
the towns are then chlified and
rated -in accordance with thir par-
ticular suitability for particurax„ in-
dustries.
‘,I
The late Samuel Austin, founder
of The Austin Company Limited,
which firm is building the Sheaffer
plant at Goderich, was born at
Orton Waterville, England, in
1850. He started to work when
14 years of age with the village
carpenter. When he heard of the
great Chicago fire in 1871 he de-
cided to go there because he fig-
ured carpenters would be needed.
Stopping over at. Cleveland to visit
friends he decided to remain there
instead of going on to Chicago.
Later, at Cleveland, he established
the firm which is today one of the
largest building contracting firms
in the United States, having
branches in Canada too. .
