TOURIST TRADE
Canadian travellers spent $336
millions • in the United States and,
other countries last year. Visitors
to this country, mostly Americans,
spent $276 millions.
It's all very well to talk about
our bracing climate, our magni-
ficent scenery, our wonderful fish-
ing and hunting. That is true but
we must remember that other
countries have -these things too,
and some of them additional na-
tural assets which you won't find
•
in Canada or at the same season.
If we really want to develop our
tourist industry, then we will have
to do something more than boast,
thinks The Financial Post
We need better roads, better
food and cleaner dishes in our
restaurants: We need cleaner
.washrooms in our gasoline sta-
tions. We need lower prices both
for services and for merchandise
which the tourist wants. Above
all, nowever, we must cease trying
to create an imitation of The en -

Another article in the same pub-
lication -and written by Robert
and Herbert Radunz tells of the
visit of the power boat Maddy,Lou

Goderich.
This article reads in part as
follows: •
'At 5 p.ni. we docked" at Bert
MacDonald's gas dock. Webster's
dictionary say's that hospitality is
to entertain with generous kind-
ness. - In Goderich, hospitality sis
Bert MacDonald. After gassing us
up he called the customs man:
Then he wanted to know if ,•e
were going to stay, because if we
were, he said we could use his dock
-across ---the----breakwater-.__chaimeL.
from his place, which incidentally
offers excellent dockage for all
sniatl boats. To top it all off he
sent one of his tugs over with the
customs man and then informed
us to blow our horn when we
wanted to go ashore. - The tug
would bring us to his place thereby,
coving us a long walk around the
it.,rhor to town. We washed up,
cion>t_.ed into shore clothes_ and
signaled for Bert's tug. He told
us to take, our_ _titre because he'd
leer', ,.t boat handy to take us back
to ,ur berth._. The town is on a
hill and the walk front the harbor
seems to be 'straight up. It is an
old city built in the' shape of a
wheel with a large city park as the
hub and all business and life in
the city revolves around it. We
enjoyed a leisurely supper at a
local restaurant and then after a
walk around the hub mingling with
the Saturday eight crowd we went
back to the Maddy -Lew and turned,
in.- Sunday was a quiet day and
proved to be one of the most en-
joyable of our trip. After a good
breakfast we cleaned ship, straight-
ened up sone cif our gear that had
become disheveleid - 'during the
storm and then sat back in our
deck chairs watching the towns
folk gradually crowding down -.j0
the breakwater for a Sunday—stroll..
We decided to join the 'throng, s)
oil we went.,.. Bert MacDonald runs
a Sunday excursion iq his tugs out
to the end of the breakwater and
hack. like the bus driver taking
a bus ride on his day off we clitn',-
ed aboard the Donald Bert and for
the amazing sunt of 10c had a dr-
lightful 15 minute boat ride.
"The Canadian gr:iiii ship Algo-
rail was alongside the elevator so
we went aboard to inspect her.
Looking over the engine room,
bridge, and watching them unload
was quite an experience. Gude-
rich is the large,5t port on the
Canadian side of Lake Huron and
can accommodate. st+veral freight-
ers besides offering dock space for
cruise ships. By this time We
were starting to get hungry, so
we bought some freshly caught
perch from a fishing tug, moved
Our galley stove, table and deck
chairs out on the dock and hada
supper of fresh Lake Huron perch,
fried potatoes, string beans, soup,
cocoa and peaches. For entertain-
ment that evening we. once again
went up oter the hill to town and
listened to the local band play 'a
concert in the park. When we ar-
rived back at our dock we found
some company in the form of a
21 ft. Cruis-A-Long, the Sea Gull
from Cleveland and also the Quan-
dry from Detroit.
Monday ,morning at breakfast
we 'had a tough decision to make.,
weather and go further north or
should we go south into the Lake
Erie islands' Due to the fact that
the Chief had to be home by the
end of the week we felt that it
would be easier for him to get
transportation home from Lake
Erie in case a summer storm
should bottle us up in a harbor, so
we elected to go south. The next
morning at 7.12 we left the dock
at Goderich, waved goodbye to
Bert MacDonald: as we 'passed
through the breakwater."
Mrs_ Gray—"You're looking very
happy this morning. Have you
Thad good news?"
Mrs. Green—"Wonderful± My
husband* has broken • down and
we're going to Palm Beach for
'the winter."
"Does yo' take this woman for
thy lawfully wedded wife?" asked
the colored parson, glancing at the
diminutive, watery -eyed,. bowleg-
ged bridegroom, who stood beside
two hundred and ten pounds of
feminine assurance.
"Ah takes nothin'," gloomily re-
sponded the bridegroom. "Ah's
bein'.tooked."
