Lions Club Holds
Its Ladies' Night
Lions annual ladies' night was
held in the auditorium of the
arena Friday night with a fair
attendance. Opening with a buf-
fet supper, the evening's program
was followed with dancing, games
and entertainment. Lion president
Gordon .McManus extended a wel-
come.
Lion Leo Walzak. was chairman.
A vote of thanks, moved by Lion
George Filsinger, was extended to
Lions Leo Walzak and Ray Hughes
who were responsible for putting
on the evening's program. Among
the guests introduced was Mr.
Claude Turner of London and
formerly of Goderich.
After Lion Leo Walzak moved a
toast to the ladies, Mrs. Frank
Curry replied on behalf of the
ladies present. She stated that
she believed the ladies were in
favor of the Lions continuing their
monster bingos; that the Lions de-
served credit for their successful
Young Canada Week; that the
ladies were proud of the achieve-
ments of the Lions.
Music was provided by an orch-
estra from the R.C.A.F. Station,
Clinton, and Frank Hamon was the
sparkling master of ceremonies.'
During the old time dancing, Reg
McGee consented 'to act as caller
as the dancers went through their
paces.

TRY THIS MOTOR JAUNT
The north harbor road, built
last year, no longer ends at
the mouth of the Maitland
River. A good gravel road
has been built at the end of
it so that motorists can pro-
ceed with safety right over to
the north sideof the harbor
channel. Then, the road loops
around the peninsula right
back to the end of the north
harbor road again, eliminating
two-way travel on the scenic
loop road. if you have not
driven over this road, do so
for you will enjoy it and will
be amazed at the potentialities
of this strategically located
peninsula which for so many
years -has been comparatively
unused.

PERSONAL MENTION
Mrs. J. W. Moore has returned
from spending the winter in De-
troit with her daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Empey have
returned to Goderich after spend-
ing the winter months at Winter
Haven, Florida.
Guests with Lieuts. J. Mayo and
J. Ellery of The Salvation Army
on Saturday were Lieut. Mayo s
mother, Mrs. Harry Mayo, her
sister, Miss Elizabeth Mayo and her
brother, Mr. Jas. Mayo, also Mrs.
Mills and Miss Shirley Mills, all
of Toronto.
Becoming suspicious when a wo-
man wanted to buy a pair of shoes
without even trying them on saved
a Goderich storekeeper from being
swindled last Saturday—but three
other merchants weren't so fortun-
ate, losing a total of about $200.
13111 Anderson, manager of the
local Maher Shoe Company store
was dubious when a man and wo-
man entered the store Saturday
afternoon. He had read in news-
paPers a description of the couple
of cheque forgers _ making the
rounds of Western Ontario centres
and refused to cash a'cheque for
them, saying it was against the
company's policy.
The couple, however, made small
purchases at the Major Store,
Fashion Shoppe and Gerrard's
Clothing, offering in payment
cheques for $72.48 stamped "The
Tillson Company Limited" and
signed by the "company treasur-
er." The cheques were said to
have been made. out on forms
from one of the local bank
branches.
Anderson said he called Pro -
vineial Police, but it was about 10
minutes before police arrived up-
town, and by that •time the swind-
lers had disappeared.
Description Tallies
Police said that description of
the pair given by local merchants
indicated they were the same forg-
ers that had been passing similar
cheques in Stratford, S. Thomas,
St. Marys, London 'and Woodstock.
Tilisonburg police said that the
stamp used on the cheques was
likely stolen when the Tillson
Company of foe in Tillsonburg was
entered by thieves„several months
ago. They said the Tillson Com-
pany had been non-existent for a
number of years.
The forgers, operating in a wide.
area, have not tried to pass
cheques in Tillsonburg. Nearest
place to be' victimized was Delhi,
12 miles away.
Three cheques were passed in
Stratford and, several in Wood-
stock a week ago last Saturday.
Some of the cheques passed were
said to have been signed by "R. S
Smale,” reputed to be treasurer of
"The Tillson Co. ).td. of I4 ndo .°
The cheques passed in .Woodstock.
