Is Soil Ready? It is a serious mistake to do any general sowing or cultivating while the ground is .the least bit muddy. Heavy soil is injured ani later trouble results wen it is dug or worked too soon. A good test is to take a little earth and squeeze it in the hand. If when Huron -Bruce's veteran Progre ,- sive Conservative` member itt the Provincial Legislature, John Hanna. believes Ontario's rural trail box.ss are "a disgrace." He said during discussion 'of travel and publicity estimates that they weren't up to the standard of the 'rest of our beautiful coun- try. Perhaps it was a matter the Federal Government should handle as it was concerned with mails; Opposition Leader Farquhar Oliver said in his riding of .Grey South the .Women's Institute and other organizations had campaigns which took care of "such ' things and he thought they could safely be "left to local pride." thing can be moved if we observe a few simple rules. The main thing is to keep the roots undis- turbed, to keep them away from the air and to cover quickly and firmly with fine moist soil. Water- ing during and immediately after transplanting is essential, unless the soil is very moist and also if possible supply a little shade for I the first few hours or a day or two. With big things like trees and shrubbery, it is alsp advisable to tie trunks or main stem firmly to a stake to prevent the wind loosening. If there are only a few things to move, one should do the job in the evening and prefer- ably when there is no wind. Above all it is niost important 'to cover the roots well and keep the soil firmly pressed around them. To speed growth and lessen the shock of moving it is a good plan to sprinkle a little chemical fertilizer around, but not actually touching the rots. " Early in April Tom Webster of Nest Wawanosh will launch his 38th year as beef ring butcher, a job be started "as a kid" and has been at ever since, says the Luck - now Sentinel. He has three rings —Dungannon, St. Helens and St. Augustine. Tom has another "sideline." He has been treasurer of . Dungannon United Church since 1925, and has performed this task so efficiently the congregation just won't let flim, give it up. Cultivation Killing -weeds is only one of the reasons for cultivation. The big gain is the improvement -in the texture of the soil. Cultivation lets in air, breaks up the. clay lumps. makes the soil more open so that it, will absorb and hold more moisture. Massey -Harris built the world's first full scale farm machinery "Test Track", where M -H tractors, combines and other farm machines are be- ing tested, accurately and scientifically, for vibration, fatigue, resistance to shock, resistance to water and dust, stability on slopes, climbing power, traction in mud, steering, torque, weight distribution. Combined with practical field tests, these scientific track tests conducted under controlled,° comparable conditions are providing Massey -Harris engineers with the necessary knowledge to improve design, in- crease durability, and improve the performance of every M -H machine that runs' on wheels.
