AND .:..HERE AND THERE
Frank Smith of Saltford, who has
been 15 years with Sandy Contract-
ing Company, arrived back home at
Saltford last Friday with Mrs.
Smith after a seven weeks' trip to
the British Isles.
Frank won the car in the lucky
draw of the Kinsmen Club during;
Goderich's Old Home Week and
used the money for a trip to the
land of his birth, England. He lett
England for Canada when he was
only 11 years of age and on this,
his first trip back home, saw his
mother, sisters and other relativeti.
Total cost of trip was about $1,600
but it was "worth every cent of it,"
he said.
They left Goderich on December
10 and sailed on the Empress of
Canada. While in London they
heard the ship was on fire. When,
they sailed for home from Liver-
pool on a sister ship, the Empress
of France, they could see the over-
turned Empress of Canada still
burning away in the harbor.
Everything in England was en-
-owaable but the weather --=and it
s so damp, cold and foggy it was
almost unbearable, they said. Eng-
land is said to be having the cold-
est winter in 27 years. Even the
plumbing, which is outside a lot of
houses in England, is freezing up.
Of the two weeks they were in
London they saw the sun shining
for only about two hours, they said. 1
Frank brought home a copy' of
'The Daily Mirror, a London daily
newspaper which claims „"the
world's biggest daily sale." It had ,
only 12 pages, each no larger than
about half the size of a Signal -Star
page.
You can get just about anything
you want—if you have the money
to buy it, "but very few people
have the money to buy." The gen-
eral level of wages is very low.
You have to pay about 18 cents
for a good orange. You are 31 -
lowed one can of fruit per year.
Meat is ,.just too dear to buy.
secretary, Mrs. T. Donnelly; flower
convener, Mrs. A. L. Cole; assist-
ant flower convener, Mrs. C. A.
Reid; Empire and world affairs,
Mrs. G. Paterson; assistant, Mrs.
H. B. M. Tichborne; membership
secretary, Mrs. C. K. Saunders;
educational secretary, Mrs. E. J.
Pridham; Echoes secretary, Mrs.
T. G. Glazier; endowment secre-
tary, Mrs. F. E. Hibbert; welfare
at home and abroad; Mrs. J. H.
Lauder; telephone 'cpgnvener, Mrs.
W. A. Sutherland; assistants, Mrs.
R. Bridle, Mrs. B. Goldthorpe, Mrs.
G. Whaley, Mrs. C. Worsell; coun-
cillors, Mrs. A. H. Erskine, Mrs.
J. C. Cutt, Mrs. H. Dodd, Mrs. L.
Westbrook, Mrs. W. Knechtel, Mrs.
F. R. Redditt, Mrs. H. C. Dunlop,
Mrs. W. F. Callow, Mrs. W. A.
Coulthurst.
Other committees will be "ar-
ranged at an executive meeting. A
number offered their homes for fut-
ure use and a list of them was com-
piled. Mrs. Walkom consented to
let her name stand for nomination
to the Provincial council. Mrs. G.
Paterson read an interesting ar-
ticle on the Mau Mau situation in
Africa. Mrs. G. Henderson thank-
ed the hostess for her hospitality
on behalf of those present.
-AUBURN
One thing they do not neglect
is babies. Every one of them is
supplied with plenty of the re-
quisites for healthy growth—milk,
orange juice and cod liver oil.
Every, baby you see looks every
healthy. But the people them-
selves look a bit pinched and wan,
said • Frank.
In London they saw mile after
mile of bleachers being built along
the route of -procession for the
coming Coronation ceremonies.
•They thought less money should
be spent on this and more to sup-
ply needs of the common people.
"Yes it was a wonderful visit
but we are very glad to be back
in Saltford," said Frank. So is
Bambi, their devoted toy terrier,
who : had been farmed out ' to
friends in the absence of its
owners.
