LEE TRUMAN A friend has shared with me some of her views on life: A 9,000 part of the charm of Mrs. Rhodes' letter is that she writes with 87 years of ex- perience. Much of what she offers out of her years is a challenge for you and me to go and do likewise. With her permission, I would like to pass her special insight along to you. "When I married, I left my parent's home, my church and my community of friends which I loved very much. At first, I, was lonely and rather sorry for myself, Then I began to write letters. I wrote to the old people I remem- bered who just sat and rocked all day, and to the young people I knew had never been outside the county, • and told them of the outside world. "I wrote to a widow who had remarried and moved to Chicago. I e she must miss her ens as I did mine, - and could give her some news of old places and mutual friends. She was so lonely that she said that the letter from me was like new life for her. Then, I began to write in earnest. "A young girl who had married early, and lost her husband in an accident, now had her two girls to raise. She was a very creative child in school, and so I wrote what I had to say in poetry to her, and out Of her loneliness she wrote to me and what it was she needed to say also in "Soon I was writing lonely persons in tubercular hos- 10:30 Mr. Dressup 8, 10 Galloping Gourmet 1a 11:00 Sesame Street 10, 8 Galloping Gourmet 11 Betty and Friends 13 11:30 I Saw That 11 Horoscope Dollars 13 12:00 Cartoons 8, 10, 13 ° Canadian Cavalcade 6 12:30 NewsMidday 8, 1110, 6 Price Is Right -13 • 12:45 Movies "Big Rose" 8; "Birds Do lt" 10 1:00 Double Exposure 11, Match Gerrie 13 1:30 Definition 13 Let's Go 6 Days of Our Lives 11 2:00 Courtship of Eddie's Father 13 Horoscope Fortune 6 2:15 Howie Meeker 8 2:30 Edge of Night 8, 10. This was my elixir of life, because I could never for a moment feel sorry for myself when I was trying to cheer up some- one else. I would write whether I felt good or not, but soon I was in a good frame of mind. "I wrote of a' thrilling sun- set, a little girl who shared `a fresh picked flower, a boy who let me pet his new puppy, and the other good things which happened, knowing that each person who read these things, also shared them. I wrote to the discour- aged that they might look at the stars, and not the mud. "I am in my 87th year, am in good health. I have eyes that see almost as well as they once did, and my hear- ing is nicely adequate. Now I am waiting for my Master's call but I keep writing letters. I only wish 'that others might take up this letter writing, through which I have found so much happiness." The secret is that while Mrs. Rhodes has given much of herself through the years, she has gotten much more than she has given. Beyond the sheer pleasure of bringing a bit of light into dark lives, she has become a skilled •ob- server, and a sensitive thoughtful person. This woman knew she could have become an ingrown, self-centered selfish person. She made a choice. She chose to direct her time and ener- gies outward. She gave much, but by giving, she got much more in return. A basic law of life.
