Career or kitchen
— which is better?
v\
By ELEANOR B.
RODGERSON, M.D.
Q. It's hard for me to decide
whether I want to be a house-
wife or have a career. How
can 1 be sure 11 do the thing
that is right for me?
A. I don't suppose you can
be absolutely sure.
There is a certain amount
of general preparation that
every woman ought to have
and, as you live, you will
gradually settle on what is
important for you.
I think it is a mistake to
rule one, or the other, role out
completely. Develop all your
talents so that you have inter-
ests to keep you busy and
alert, at all times.
If you decide on a family,
you should realize that its
need for you will diminish as
the children grow older.
Then you will have oppor-
tunities to do something on
your own. Many wives
worked before marriage and
Pick up their skills after-
wards when the children have
"flown thenest," or extra
money is required.
Husbands are usually
grateful for the help, and
their lives may actually be
prolonged. Women who have
not worked before marriage
scan find opportunities for
training in fields that interest
them
What is right • for you will
become • .evident as you pre-
pare yourself and as time

- Most women feel incom-
plate wititont marriage and
;pregnancies and .children.
After all, women were made
to reproduce ,the races.
However, women have
many other capabilities and
are unhappy; usually, if they
don't develop these also. It is
not possible to plan every
step of your life and; expect no
deviations. Unforeseen hap-
penings are bound -to turn up.
Just make the most of what-
ever is available.
Q. How far . ahead of; the
pregnancy that I want b) have
Someday should I prepare —
like no aspirin, no tran-
quilizers, and so on?
A. Fetuses (unborn babies)
in theearly weeks of preg-
rearcy are the most suscepti-
able to drugs mothers might be
taking: The first six weeks
are the most critical in their
formation.

traception, she is wise not
take any drugs on her own at
any time.
This advice includes
smoking.
It is true that some women
take drugs and smoke 'and
have apparently normal
babies. Why one fetus is af-
fected and another is not is
questionable. Quantity of the
drug, timing and the genetic
makeup of the Individual
probably exert influences.
Before you start your preg-
nancy, it is a good idea to stop
taking, or using, for several
months, unnecessary sub-
stances that could affect your
baby.

THE MEMOIRS
OF A SURVIVOR
by Doris Lensing
Doris Lessing, in her newest
novel, projects us into a grim,
frightful future. Just as Hilton's
"Lost Horizon" was a dream -
world of love, peace and beauty ;
"The Memoirs Of A Survivor" is
the nightmare of a futuristic state
of barbarism, anarchy, and
savagery. '4
The city of the author's nar-
rative is unnamed, but believed
to be London. The author does not
enlighten us as to what initially
caused this decay of civilization,
but rather, describes the odd oc-
curances as she- sees them_ from
her first storie flat. Electricity,
heat and all technology have
come to a standstill. The popula-
• tion of this large city is diminish-
ing as people leave in "tribes" of
hundreds at a time, taking with
them nothing more than food and
clothes. Bands of youngsters,
some as younghasfour years old,
begin to terrorize those still living
there, resorting to such savage
means of survival as consuming
rats, and at times, even humans.
Early in the story, an unknown
man appears at . the author's
abode, leaving in her care a
young girl, Emily.. Emily and her
half -dog, half -cat of a pet, Hugo,
are the main characters of the
tale. The two are constantly ob-
serving, scrutinizing all that
happens.
K
At the same time that Lessing,
Emily and Lugoare attempting
survival, we are exposed to a
haunting twist in the sequence of
events. The. author uses a juxta-
position of past and present, and
with her, we watch Emily's,past
unfold on the wall of • Lessing's
living room, almost like a film.
There is no real plot, per se, in
this novel. Instead, Lessing
demonstrates a number of
themes. Dehumanization, an-
archy, loss of all culture and
technology, a weeping for the
past and uncertainty of the future
are among those expressed. We
can sense a sort of warning
throughout the book concerning
these thesis, as well. •
The characters are helpless.
There really is nothing they can
do .to change this irreversable
fate they are in the midst of. AlI •
they can do is observe, and wait.
Is the author trying to tell us
something about our own future,
in a time when we take so much
comfort -for granted?
Or, is a future like this unthink-
able, just as Shangri-la is? The
tale is magical, almost a fairy
tale in light of the surprise end-
ing.. Perhaps the fairy tale is a
technique to soften the blow of the
reality which could manifest in
our own lives, in future times.
Are we nothing but helpless ob-
servers? Maybe so, but with
Lessing's advice, perhaps we can
sway the future she warns us of.

sometimes a challenge and
we have one in our dining
room. I need storage space
very badly yet I do not want
to go to the expense of exten-
sive cabinet building. There
is one window in the room,
under which is a radiator
which we will not use but
which cannot be removed. I
like bright colors. The floor is
a new off-white vinyl. We
may paint.:or wallpaper the
walls which are pale green.
Our table is an old oak round
design and the chairs are lad-
der backs with hemp seats.
A. Interior designer Ann
Heller solved some problems
such as you describe in a din-
ing room when she created a
sideboard effect across one
wall (the one with the win-
dow). You might do the same
and instead of building in the
sideboard you might select
unpainted modular compo-
nents you could arrange
yourself. You could do high
shelves on each side of the
window and where the radia-
tor is located you could re-
move the backs of the compo-
nents so they fit over the ra-
diator eliminating it from
view. Heller added a plastic
laminate top to the cabinets
so they can double as a serv-
ing area for buffets. She cre-
ated a striped window shade
for the windows in her dining
room and added shutters
backed with a soft fabric. For
her room she chose a deep
blue and white wallpaper.
Choose the colors that appeal
to you and which complement
adjoining rooms, Wallpaper
is certainly one of the moat
dramatic ways of adding col-
or and personality to a drab
room.
