He was born in a log cabin there, lived in that cabin until he was old enough to take a bride and his bride too came from cabin folks. "0. C." .has never been ashamed of the fact that he comes from log cabin folks. Abe Lincoln did too, he, will tell you. "And besides," says 0. C., "a log cabin built right is just about as sensible and as comfort- able a place to live as there is." 0. C. figured he knew just about as much as there is to know about cabin building when he took his wife and five young'uns out of Carolina a few years back and moved to the State of Wash- ington.' He liked Washington. His kids were going to get a better education out there, he thought. His wife found life a little easier too, probably because 0.C. was now bringing in more money than .he ever had before. Besides, the logs in the part of Washington where they settled were the biggest and straightest 0. C. had ever seen so it is little wonder that a great new dream should take hold of him. He would buy him a piece of Iand in the lovely woods: of Snohomish County and build. himself a log cabin like the ones . he knew so `wgll bat& home in Carolina. Only much, much finer. ' One of 0. C.'s friends advised him however, that there just might be some special laws in Snohomish.County about building and that he'd better check first with the powers that be down at the County cSeat. Down at the County. Seat the Building and Plumbing Code Department told O.C. that before they could pass any opinion as to whether or not his idea was ac- ceptable, he would first have to show them his building plans. Well 0:C. had the ideas clear enough in his mind, but not being any great whiz at drawing, he found it a bit hard to put them on paper. He found the back of an old calendar however and he did the best he could. And what did the great people in the Building and Plumbing Department tell him when he brought it in for them to see? "Looks like your paper's covered with centipede tracks ! " the director told him. The Department finally .told him that if he really wanted to get serious about building, he ought to hire an architect. Also he should consult a structural engineer. The architect alone would cost 0. C. around .$1,400 and because 0. C. was pretty sure that no architect could know so much about log cabins as he did, the more he thought about it the madder he got., And finally he got so mad he simply went ahead with the building of his dream cabin- without saying another word to the County Building and Post -nasal drip is good, doctors say The patienwith self-diag- nosed sinus trouble often complains of post -nasal drip. A group of doctors writing on sinusitis point out, howev- er, that a normal amount of post -nasal drip is valuable, because unless about two quarts of fluid run clown the naso -pharynx daily, the throat becomes dry and un- comfortable. Therapeutic waterbeds help premature babies A synthetic womb for pre- mature infants has been- ated by Dr. Louis Gluck, chief of neonatalogy at\the Univer- sity of California Medical Center, San Diego, Calif. Infants born prematurely are placed on 8 heated water- bed kept buoyant and moving by a slow-motion oscillator. Plwibing Department. But the Department got wind of 0. C.'s rebellion, and they sent an officer up with a ittop-work order, and told him that he was now subject to a fine of $300 a day for every day he didn't comply with the order. At Deist reports 0. C. had taken $350'odt of his meagre savings to hire an attorney. "I can't afford $350 really," O. C. told the press, "but 1 don't think people realize how they're being taken' over by all these. govern- ment officials. If you don't get this government slowed down and back to the, people, by the time my children want to build their houses, they'll be surrounded, by rules." The American mag zine Country Journal in repor ' 0. C.'s battle with the bureau acy and wishing him well, includ a couple of statistics *with t opinion. "Somewhere along line," the Journal 'says, : " belief took hold of us,that ever thing needs managing and that management is what got us where we are today. And the result is that there are now more managers than 'producers in the U.S. As of 1970, this country had 21 million managers, officials, in- spectors, etc., and only 18 million people who were doing real -wordy' And yet the U.S. is not the most over governed country in the world. That distinction, accord- ing to our last Auditor General belongs to Canada! Copy for Crossroads Classi- fieds must be received by 6 p.m. Wednesday of week prior to pub- lication.
