Study.
acid helps-
Fight decay
Childrn's' teeth, treated with
phosphoric acid in a Study,
showed less decay. -
A diluted splution of the acid
was applied to the teeth of 200
children in a nonfluoridated
urban 'community, before the
dentist applied the fluoride
"bath," '
It was found that the acid in-
creased fluoride retention by
tooth enamel. The , diluted acid
mildly demineralized the
enamel, but stepped up the poten-
tial of the enamel for reminerali-
zation building up a stronger
suit of armour when fluoride is
applied.
In the test, the children aged
from 7 to 16 years, showed 34 per
cent fewer cavities.
Research has been . underway
for years to make the teeth take
on andkeep more of the decay
fighting fluoride when applied in
dental offices and schools by
dental teams.
Without the acid treatment,
much of the fluoride is washed
away during the first `24.hours,
other studies have shown.,
