The Snow Walker by Farley
Mowat
Poignant in its depiction of a
way of life that is no more, this
novel presents a memorable por-
trait of a land and its people,
capturing the essence of the Arc-
tic and of Eskimo lore. The'
merciless influence of the ele-
ments creates bonds between
humans, and between humans
and their worlds, bonds more
powerful than life or death.

than the old structure.

Turnberry Twp.
opens new bridge
Bridge openings always seem
to be held in the worst possible
weather, and Friday's official
opening of the new Turnberry
Township bridge was no excep-
tion. The snow had . stopped fall-
ing, but cold winds and overcast
skies made the event less than
pleasant for participants and
spectators alike.
Despite the weather, or per-
ps because of it, the tone of the
ceremony was short, sweet and
friendly. Huron -Bruce MPP
Murray Gaunt cut the ribbon and
ran for the warmth of the car, fol-
lowed by all the other partici-
pants. Present for the ceremony
were: Turnberry Township
Reeve Harry Mulvey, Deputy
Reeve Don Eadie, councillors
Ansdh Duncan, Dave McCallum
and Harold Elliott; engineer Ken
Dunn; contractor Owen King;
Ross Jackson-, representative
from the Department of High-
ways; Mac Wylie, contractor for
the fill; Len Baird, roads
superintendent.
The new bridge is more impor-
tant than the informal ceremony
reflected Friday. Located on
Sideroad 5-6, near Concession 6, it
replaces an older structure that
had deteriorated to a five -ton
limit. Flooding often washed out
the road on either side of it and
could have forced the road to be
closed eventually.
The new bridge is a two-lane
bridge, constructed at a cost of
about;137,000. It is jointly funded
by the townshipand the Depart-
ment of Highways. It's longer
than the old structure and higher,
with the road built up on either
side to prevent erosion and
deterioration from flooding. It
can hold over 200 tons of weight.
In case of an emergency, St.
John Ambulance suggests that a
first aid kit should be kept handy
in the home. -
