ROSENBLUM
Contract bridge has as-
sumed several variant forms
since its incubation in the late
1920s. Millions of people play
rtibber bridge at social get-
togethers ("Party bridge")
with perhaps small stakes
hinging on the outcome. Still
others play for large
amounts, some striving for
their livelihood in this way.
The theory behind rubber
bridge is simple - as declar-
er, make the contract; as de-
fenders, beat it.

JAI'S RETREAT
The Japanese Fleet was
driven from the Solomon Is-
lands on Oct. 11, 1942.
Match -point pairs, the
backbone of tournament
bridge, is another matter.
Here, where the hands are
duplicated and replayed as
many as a dozen times, the
object is to outscore not the
opponents of the moment, but
rther all other pairs who will
Hold the same hands you do.
Rubber bridge players find it
strange that in duplicate
bridge a pair usually doesn't
play against its true rivals.
The match -point declarer
on occasion will jeopardize a
rnakeable contract to play for
an overtrick (anathema to a
rubber bridge player) . Simi-
larly, a defender may sur-
render all hope of beating a
hand for fear of allowing an
overtrick. Since you earn a
point for each pair you top
and only one-half point for
each tie it is imperative to
make the most of every hand.
Today's hand illustrates
the different approach of
each school.
The duplicate declarer may
wonder why he didn't reach
six spades. He will win the
first trick with dummy's
queen of diamonds and lead a
low spade. If East produces
the nine or queen South will
cover. If trumps are 2-1 and
West's ace of spades is spent
on the initial trump lead de-
clarer can virtually claim
six. It is an easy matter to set
up the dummy hand with no
other loser. If d4amonds do
break badly, a blimp finesse
for West's club ace will estab-
lish two discards for declar-
er's queen and jack.
When the hand was played
South embarked on 'this
course. East showed out on
the first trump lead, West
won and shifted to a low heart
taken by dummy's ace. When
West got in with another
trump a heart continuation to
East's queen enabled West to
ruff a diamond return for the
setting trick. East-West won
three trumps and a heart.
South was not tempted by
an alternative line which
would have failed also. Su-
perficial analysis suggests
winning the first trick in
hand and leading the club
king. West will cover the first
or second high club lead and
dummy will ruff. Since de-
clarer has no immediate re-
entry he is unable to discard
durn)ny's losing hearts.
Was declarer greedy? Only
a rubber bridge player would
think so.
Instead of racing hungrily
after two overtricks the
methodical - plodding, per-
haps? - rubber enthusiast
seeks to secure his contract
before looking beyond. His
solution is simple - win the
ace of diamonds and fire back
a diamond. West may ruff but
he will never get a heart
trick. The losing heart goes
on dummy's diamond queen
while West trumps again.
This declarer racks up a plus
score as only three spades
are lost.

Tile Country Music Aids
were presented int Nashville en
Monday. . eventing, i a n iv ,
and wben the rest uf us were
supposed o be countingour
blessings, the country-and-
western stars were counting their
gold records and wondering why
they hadn't won for their best
seller of the year.
Named best female and male
vocalists of the year were Dolly,
Parton and Waylon Jennings.
What a long way the little baby -
'voiced Dolly has come since the
days she first arrived on the
Nashville scene!
The top group of the year was
the Stader Brothers who ,on the
country scene, can make just
about anything turn into gold.
Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn
made it as the best duo. Buck
Trent and Roy Clark Were the top
instrumental group.
The album of the year was
Ronny Milsap's "Legend in My
ime" and the single of the year
was "Before the Next Teardrop
Falls" by Freddie Fender.
Named iong of the year was
"Back Home Again", written by
Johnny Denver. He was com-
peting with Waylon Jennings,
Loretta Lynn, Ronnie Milsap and
Conway Twitty as entertainer of
the year and Denver took it.
Minnie Pearl, who joined the
Grand Ole Opry in 1940 and is
still wearing the same hat, was
named to the Country Music Hall
of Fame. She probably has seen
more people come and go through
the Opry doors than anyone else.
By her own admission,. she has
gone on stage when it was almost
impossible to perform, most
specifically when friends like
Johnny Horton, Jim Reeves,
Hawkshaw Hawkins, ' Johnny
Horton, Patsy Cline and others
lost -'their lives in plane crashes.
But her motto was always "The
show must go on" and she went
out there like a trouper to make
people laugh, though her own
laughter was only on the surface.
She has personified country
music and country humor
throughout the years and has now
been honored by her peers. 'Spice
they did it while she was alive to
enjoy it.
The awards are given each
year (this ins' the" .ninth)' and
winners 'are selected by the
members of the Country Music
Association. My guess is that, as
in the cases of the Oscars and
Emmys, writers vote for writers,
singers for other singers,,.,etc.
Arte Johnson was the Grand
Marshal of the Kitchener -Water-
loo Octoberfest parade and while.
in the area talked to several
people about his former "Laugh -
In" days. It was interesting to
note that by his own admission, it
was the cast of L -I that killed it. It
had begun as a fun thing with
everyone just having lots of
laughs and not really caring who
had the funniest lines or the
biggest jokes. But as time went
on, and everyone started receiv-
ing a fan following, the profes-
sional jealousy started to creep
in, particularly between the cast
and the two stars, Dan Rowan
Hallowe'en
safety program
For the third consecutive year,
the Ontario Safety League is
distributing Halloween safety
material to school children. Ma-
terials have been. provided by,
Rowntree Mackintosh Canada
and carry no corporate identifi-
cation. Distribution of 405,000 ac-
tivity sheets is now being com-
pleted through contracts with
Boards of Education and indi-
vidual shco6ls where necessary.
The sheets include the follow-
ing safety tips, recommended by
OSL and the Canada Safety Coun-
cil:
1. Wear a costume that is a light
colour. Decorate it with reflec-
tive tape or fluorescent paint.
Drivers will see you more easily
in the dark.
2. Use make-up to paint your own
Halloween face. Or, if you have to
use a mask, make sure the eye -
openings are big enough to see to
the sides.
3. Costumes should be flame -re-
sistant and short enough that you
do not trip.
4. To be really safe, carry a flash-
light ... never a candle.
5. Call on one side of the street,
then the other. Don't crisscross
the street.
6. Young children should go out
with an adult. Olderkids should
trick -or -treat in groups.
7. Ask your parents how far to go
from the house and at what time
to be back.
8. Do not go inside strange houses
or apartments.
9. Let your parents check your
treats before you eat any.
Halloween is the time for good,
safe fun. Don't damage other
people's property.
