LET'S TALK
Solitude brings
rare rewards
By REV. W. LEE
TRUMAN, Ph.D.
In today's crowded civiliza-
tion, involved in our busy and
active society, persons are
finding it increasingly diffi-
cult to enjoy one of the most
priceless luxuries which life
can give - occasional total
solitude. •
Being alone does not mean
being lonely. It does mean
cutting off the external, the
superficial and the superflu-
ous and finding the inner
strength which one finds best
in solitude. Such time alone
enriches the spirit and fills
the mind.
The one common factor I
have found in the lives of'
saints and geniuses is that
they have found their great-
est inspirations in solitude. It
can bring rewards to all of us.
While there is a price to, be
paid, we can all afford it if we
wish.
You do not have to be a
rebel or an eccentric in order
to spend time alone. A walk
alone at dusk, watching the
dawn break, an idle few mo-
ments on a golden beach or
garden bench or a slow drive
on a back road in beautiful
country - no life should be
too busy for moments like
these.
I happen to enjoy skiing
and gliding. In e>h, I find
myself alone, and it is these
hours that I find the most re-
freshing and productive. In
the limitless reaches of the
sky, or on my knees, prob-
lems which seemed so impos-
sible in the demanding
turmoil of the office come in-
to perspective for me as they
do in no other way.
I enjoy walking and am
blessed with a strong body
and long legs. When I walk
early in the morning, every-
thing pulls itself back into
perspective. This is a better
perspective than I have had
when I've been hard at work
at my desk. I get a chance to
analyze the worries which
have been pestering me, put
them in order of importance,
and dismiss the trivia with
which I often clutter up my
thinking. Also, the armor
which all 6f us assume in our
social contacts falls away
when I take time to be alone
because I make peace. with
myself again.
Do not be afraid of being
alone now and then, by choice
or `opportunity. If yod are,
watch out. Something is
wrong.
Make it a point to stop and
take time to make your own
acquaintance. You will prob-
abl' get something of a sur-
prise because you will be
meeting a provocative and
stimulating person - your-
self.
