One of the great Canadian
traditions in television this week
began its 19th season on the CBC
Television network. Ranking
second only to NHL Hockey as far
as Canadian shows are con-
cerned, "Front Page Challenge"
has become an institution in
many Canadian bones. This
season changing from its regular
Tuesday evening spot, it will be
seen Mondays at 8:30.
"Front Page Challenge" began
as a summer series in 1951. It
featured top news stories and
many famous guests. It , also
featured Gordon Sinclair who had
been well-known to radio audi-
ences }i 'a sa ► elK ers
and barrelled' roto television to
make his presence felt there. He
did - not always tactfully! '
fiis co-horts have beenmany in
the 19 years. Thirteen ,weeks
after the original show, Pierre
Berton joined him as a regular;
he's been there .ever since.
Lovely Toby Robins then joined
the crew to not necessarily make
the show more educational, but
definitely add a great deal of
feminine pulchritude. After a few
years in the stall, 'she retired
from panel shows to devote her
full time to acting and her place
was taken by Betty Kennedy,
another well-known voice on
radio and an interviewer who
could talk about almost any sub-
ject and hold her own with the
fastest talkers and thinkers. Fred
Davis was the confident and
sedate host who always looked as
though he walked off a page in a
men's fashion magazine.
Guest panelists have been
featured on the series throughout
the years and interview guests
have come from every corner of
the world which perhaps ac-
counts for the undying popularity
of the show. There is always an
element of surprise.
In recent years the show has
gone 'on -the road' with shows
taped in various cities across
Canada. This has also added to its
popularity.
Whatever the reason, it re-
mains in a • tender spot in the
hearts of Canadians and one of
the most popular shows in the
nation. After 19 years in prime
time, it remains one of the few
series to survive the growing
pains of the 50s, the changing
times of the 60s and the boring
blahs of the 70s.

If you had another commit-
ment when it first made the
rounds or if you maybe thought it
would be two hours of boredom,
you have a chance to hear it
again. It's the Cliff Jones
musical, "Hey Marilyn", to be
repeated -on the CBC Radio Net-
work on Wednes?lay, October 1,
at 8 p.m.
First heard on the net rk last
February, the musical s the
story of Marilyn Monroe, told in
music, nearly 40 songs in all. He
does not just make it another
sensational story about the
doomed star but tells the story
sympathetically and understand-
ingly. If you think, as I did, that
you can never become involved in
a radio show, listen and see how
wrong you are.
After the February airing,
critical acclaim was general
throughout the country. Perhaps
it was best summed up in the
Halifax Ch``ionicle-Herald • which
stated: "The tragedy of Marilyn
Monroe ... has never'been more
poignant than in'the new musical
by a Canadian compostrr whose
name will one day be a household
word -- Cliff Jones."
Beverly D'Angelo made her
radio debut as Marilyn. She was.
joined in the musical drama by •
Cal and Rory Dodd, Peter and -
Barbara Law, Rudy Webb, David
George, Cathy Young, Jeanette
Klopsch and. Scott Fisher. This
past. summer, Beverly made•her _ stage debut in Jones' first radio
musical, "Kronborg:1582" which
`took to the stager,the ChnOotte
town est1v .pis cueto1apening-ur -
Boston on Nobember t5. Beverly
played Ophelia in this version of
Hamlet which will open in Broad- 1,
way this winter.
"Hey Marilyn ! " returns as
part of World Music Week on
International Music Day. Spend
an evening at the radio for a
change, and hear this great new
musical by a genius Canadian
composer.
