And he looks lifter the whole person - not just ENERGY WASTE WATCHER This column will look at painless ways of cutting down your fuel and electricity bills at home. Have any suggestions? Send them along to the Energy Waste Watcher at Information EMR, 588 Booth Street, Ottawa KI A 0E4. How many energy leaks are there in your hot water tank and piping? You might check out these five key points: 1. Is the tank properly insula- ted? Hot water stored in a tank' gradually loses heat even if no water is drawn. Newer water heaters are equipped with insu- lated tanks, thereby reducing the 1 amount of lost heat. If your present tank is an older model with little or no insulation, you ban cut down on heat loss by wrapping the exterior with a layer of mineral wool or glass fiber insulation. 2. Is the water heater in a cold or drafty corner? Avoid instal- ling the heater in a poorly heated area. A corner of the basement would be better than the garage, for example. 3. Is the distance from tank to taps more than 10 feet? In a new home, have the water heater in- stalled as closely as possible to where water is needed. Water at the tap takes a few seconds to flow out at a uniformly hot tem- perature because the hot water cools travelling from tank to taps. Too great a distance be- tween the heater and the sink or bath can cause a good deal of energy waste. For example, a 10 - foot rather than a 30 -foot pipe can ,save you enough hot water over a month for 10 showers. 4. Do your hot water pipes run through a cool basement or above a drafty window? If they do and ° are uninsulated, wrap them with insulating strips (made of- glass fiber or mineral wool and available from building sup• - ply stores) to cut down on need- less heat loss. 5. Dripping taps? They are a nuisance as well as a waste of ,hot water (arid money) . A leak that can fill a teacup in 10 min- utes can waste more than 1,500 gallons of hot water a year. And add about $20 to your annual Hydro bill. A new rubber washer purchased at the hardware store would stop the drip and make it easier to turn the tap off. By. the way, you don't need a plumber's -certificate to change a washer. Here's how: First shut off the main, water valve. Wrap some adhesive tape around the cap put. Take off the handle by .removing the screw. Remove the cap ,nut with a wrench by turning it counter- clockwise. Slip the stem out of the tap. Replace the washer beneath the stem. Replace the stem, tighten the cap nut, and attach the handle. Remember: Even though hot water is basic to our comfo%t it is also a service that must be paid for and uses up incredible amounts of energy. Using hot water when you need it is not wasteful, but unchecked energy leaks are. A reader information service courtesy of Energy, Mines and Resources, Canada. In other words, the family doctor provides comprehensive and contin- uing care to the individual patient within the family and community setting. Strange then, that many people go about choosing a family doctor with less care than they would bring to selecting a plumber or a TV repairman. How do you find a good family doctor? Ur. W Gifford -Jones, in his help- ful book The Doctor Game, says, "Don't expect your fingers to find the perfect doctor by wandering through the Yellow Pages." He also advises that it's a good idea to find a family physician before you need one. If you're moving to a new loca- tion - and Canadians, on e average, do so once every four or five years --r- ask your present doc- tor to recommend one of his medi- cal colleagues in + e place to which you're going. But, if you're starting from scratch -- ask around in your; new neighborhood.
