HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE
Period roles
suit Heston
By NANCY ANDERSON
HOLLYWOOD -- Can you
imagine Gene, Hackman
playing,Harnlet or Paul-New-
Mail
aulNewmain Heathcliff in "Wuther-
ing Heights"?
Not likely.
And the fact is no reflection
upon their ability as actors.
However, as Charlton
Heston was pointing out the
other day in his trailer dress-
ing room on the - "Midway"
location, unless an actor be-
gins his career in costume, he
will probably never be able to
get into it comfortably.
Or at least not to the
comfort of his fans.
Heston, who's playing
Capt. Garth, a fictional hero,
in the Universal film about
World War II, thinks he's
probably played more bio-
graphical roles than any
other`. American actor, and
many of them were in period
costume.
He's been the screen's An-
drew Jackson,homas Jef-
ferson, , Michaelangelo and
Moses not to mention Sir
Thomas Moore: Apd that's
not a complete list of his-
torical personages he's por-
trayed wearing everything
from knee britches to togas.
When Cary Grant wore a
powdered wig In "The
Howards of Virginia," he
looked and probably felt silly.
But Heston moves easily
whether he's wearing Roman
sandles, slave chains or a
sword. How come?
"Well," he said leaning
back in the driver's seat of his
mobile dressing room, "any
actor who is publicly identi-
fied (I hate the word 'star,' so
I shy away from it) .., but,
anyway, once an actor is
firmly established, he's fol-
lowed through his career by
the lengthening shadow of all
the roles he's played.
"That's why an actor who's
always specialized in con=
temporary roles -- let's say a
Newman or a McQueen -
isn't accepted in different
kinds of parts."
(Both Newman and
McQueen have been accepted
as 19th Century range riders,
of course, but apparently
Heston doesn't count western
gear as "costume" nor a
western picture a period
piece, for the all-American
cowboy image is timeless.)
"To be followed by the
shadow of earlier roles isn't
necessarily bad," Heston
continued. "In fact, it's
sometimes a good thing. But
it's something you have to
deal with. You can't pretend
it's not there.
"The unknown actor never
has to contend with this.
"He plays each part on its
own terms, bringing his tal-
ents:to.it as besthe can. But
he doesn't being to it the other
parts he's played.
"The public actor, on the
other hand, always has to
deal with the audience's
memory of him in earlier
roles.
"And I think that puts a
Paul Newman and a George
Scott and a Robert Redford
and a Steve McQueen and a
Jack Nicholson - whomever
you want to name - a Gene
Hackman is another example
- in a position where they
just aren't going to be ac-
cepted playing a period role
or a non -American role.
"I think one of my greatest
• assets as an actor is partly
accident," he went on. "And
that's the fact that I began
very early to play non -Amer-
ican characters and period
characters, and that gave me
a much wider range.
"Yes, I've heard all the
jokes about Moses, but on
balance that role was a great
opportunity for me. So I can't
be disturbed that people still
remember it."
Though the Capt. Garth of
"Midway" is termed fic-
tional, Heston thinks of him
as a man almost as real as
Moses or Andrew Jackson.
"Instead of considering
Garth fictional, I think of him
as anonymous," he said. "I
like to imagine that he stands
for the hundreds of anony-
mous officers and men who
fought at Midway just as sig-
nificantly as Halsey, Nimitz
or anybody else."

ow, Mary Richards, her beat
• d,
r1en p Rhoda QrgG/!W, tMniy who
Dyed in the upstairs apartment,
and their landlady, Phyllis Linde
strom, complemented vach o ..er
beautifully to make the comedy
series one of the most succes cul
to come along ja more than a
decade.
Then Mary Tyler Moore Pre-
ductions became success greed
y
and decided if thlreeuould make a
hit in one, why couldn't three
make a hit in three and make
three times the money.
They moved Rhoda from her
dinky upstairs apartment' in
Minneapolis to the sidewalks of
New York, gave her a sister, a
,husband, a fattier and mother;
Now they're moving Phyllis to
San Francisco, giving her a
Mother-in-law and father-in-law
and a photographer friend and
seeing how she makes out: '
Cloris Leachman will have her
own series. She . will still be
Phyllis Lindstrom ' but husband
Lars is dead now so will probably
not be mentioned again twe
never did see the poor guy!) So
she goes to live with her in-laws
in San Francisco. Cloris Leach-
man, talented though she may be,
is not necessarily going to be
successful in this series. Phyllis
can be just too much of a pain -in -
the -neck, . as far as I'm con-
cerned! But m. aybe the girl has
changed for the better and is a bit
easier to take on a weekly basis.
Her co-stars will be Jane Ross
and Henry Jones as • her in-laws
and Dick Schaal as her photog-
rapher friend. 'If that name rings
a bell, he is the real-life husband
of Valerie Harper. And if that
name rings a bell, she plays the
part of Rhoda Morgenstern in her
own series. Soon the whole family
will be in on the deal! '•
Rhoda herself is going great
guns with her series. A lot of
people identified with her as she
played the lonely insecure blimp
on the first Mary Tyler Moore
season. Then when she returned
the next season a streamlined
gorgeous girl, it was like every
/ woman in America was stepping
on the soles<with'and rejoic-
ing at those lost pounds. Valerie
Harper became a household
word!
There is bound to be a loser
among the three and I hope it
isn't Mary. Three girls who
worked so well together and got
along like three toads in a puddle,
they are now each other's
competition which. is regretful.

WORDS OFTEN MISUSED
We "compare TO" when we
liken one thing to another. We
"compare WITH" when we point
out differences and similarities.
Thus: "He compared Anne's eyes
TO the blue of the sea," and,
"Anne compared her answers WITH
those in the book"
Do not say, "1 can't condone
you behaving in this manner." Say,
"I can't condone 'YOUR behaving
in this manner."
Do not say, "The girl who had
been criticized quickly left." Since
obviously she wasn't "criticized
quickly," your meaning will be
much clearer if \you say, "The girl
who had been criticized LEFT
QUICKLY."'
Do not say, "John, along with
his wife and two children, have
taken on the responsibility to do
the entire job." Say, "John, along
with his wife and two children,
HAS taken on the responsibility
OF DOING the entire job."
OFTEN MISPRONOUNCED
Dossier. Pronounce doss-ee-

Lasagne (Italian pasta). Pro-

Puissance (power, might, or

ERUDITION; knowledge ac-
