Dear Sir, -Would you he kind enough 10
allow a smolt some in your journal for the
Furpore of calling the attention of those
interested to a few facts regarding the de-
pressed condition of thoee•engeged in agri-
orilferal pursuits in Ibis Demiiiion of ours.
Before making any statements or suggesting
any rernedtee, we wish it to be diatiectly
understood, that wo do not 'protege to know
it all mid tbet others are knownothings,
hut our objeot is to invite oritioiein and get
the judgment of others on the ease, so tbat
nuitedly and intelligently we can use the
remedies that will effect the redress of our
Wrongs,
In the first place we would call attention
tu the very unpleasant position of farmers,
who now find it impossible to realize for
their prodnots the cost of production, and
consequently those of their' descendents,
who bewed the difficulty of turnieg the
forest into 'comfortable homes and fruitful
fields, now find that in thousands 9f cases
it will he impossible to retain them. In the
next p?o we wouid ask the cense of this
condition of things, and will Only enumerate
a few of the principal ones at present.
• First --all our legi.lation, both in the
Do'ininion and Local Legislatures, tends to
liy tbe heavy burden on the farmer", and
also to give Onratnnes the power to centre,
nearly i•very braneb of business inoluding
the Railway IrrPight by railroads which be
has honused.
The • agricultural population oonititutes
abouts three-fourths of our population end
represents about nine -tenths of the taxable
property, nevertheless they are wholly 000 -
trolled by business and professional mem,
and hence the tendency of ell legislation to
favor that class.
These and • tbe liability of farmers to allow
men nf other ceilings to think and reason
for them edver the Whole ground., of theit
troubles.
New, having thrown: out these causes we
leave them to the oritioism of your readers,
and will be preparernto prove in detail our
assertions, or aoknowleege frankly that we
are beatter in either caseethe result to the
farmer•will be the same inasmuch as it will
see their position before them so that they
can mit themselves in. R position to obtain
redress. Should anyone have a different
theory, or any detail to give about what has
been mentioned; we hope they will 001218
right out and let us have the benedt of
their qpinioes eo Abet alrean learn. Honing
thiewitt be the means of wakening; us' all
tip so that eie can,use the legitimate meant'
within our reach, to obtain fair play.
