on the Freugh Riviera where
Chagall, at:•:,'still lives and re-

world caritas like Paints, London
and New York where some of the
artist's more fatuous works are
on display. -
The resulting television special
will hopefully be ,shown on 'the
CBC network, . perhaps in the
1976-77 season. It will beentitled
"Homage to Chagall",
Rasky's other two works of
genius were "Tennessee Wil-
liams' South" and "Next Year in
Jerusalem", both of which won
him awards from the Academy of
Canadian Television and Radio
Artists. His study of playwright
Williams and his look at the Holy
Land were outstanding features
of -previous seasons, the latter re-
peated on the network last Sun-
day evening.

It became rather evident, while
listening to the recorded show by
the re -united Happy Gang, that
theirs is an entertainment of
bygone years. Like the days of
vaudeville, the days of the Happy
Gang bring back many happy
memories but are of another
time, another place. We cannot
go back to them and they cannot
be successfully transposed to our
day.

HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE
Fiefs' role hard
to interpret
By NANCY ANDERSON
HOLLYWOOD - W. C.
Fields allegedly didn't like
children, but Rod Steiger,
playing the eccentric comedi-
an in Universal's "W. C.
Fields and Me," obviously
does, since his newest chum
(and most enthusiastic fan) is
a 13 -year-old boy named
Derek.
Derek did the almost un -
possible, wiggled his way into
a set, when "W. C." went on
location to a mansion near
the boy's home.
An admirer of Mr. Steiger,
he wanted to meet his idol,
and he managed the coup.
"After almost everybody
left, he was playing liar's
poker, so I went over and
started talking with - him,"
Derek recounts.
And after that, for so long
as the company was located
in his neighborhood, Derek
was welcome on the set as
Steiger's special guest and as
a pet of the total cast and
crew.
Throughout ' the shooting
day, -even when he's not in a
scene, Steiger adopts the
Fields' speech patterns, so an
interview with him is an eerie
experience. One might be
talking with the dead.
However, the thoughts ex-
pressed are Steiger's own.
"Characters I play don't
follow me off the set," he ven-
tured, "except for the verbal
pattern. Maybe the voice.
"My wife says I always
change a little with the roles I
play, and I know that when
I'in playing a heavier char-
acter I'm not as gay or
humorous perhaps, as I am at
other times."
Steiger has portrayed char-
acters ranging from
Napoleon to Mussolini to
Pope John.
But Fields, he says, has
been the hardest of all to in-
terpret.
"The more I work on this,"
Steiger explained, "the more
I realize Fields never in his
life allowed anyone to know
him.
"I don't believe anyone
knew what he was really
thinking. -
"He was on the defensive
from childhood, so he created
a Fields figure. For example,
if you were talking to him like
this and should ask, 'Do you
love me?', he would switch
and say something like this,"
(Steiger's voice became
Fields' to an extreme de-
gree), "'Love? Love is noth-
ing. Love is just something
people should discard..'
"He wouldn't give you an
answer. You could never get
through to the man.
"Fields is also challenging,

obviously, because everyone
has his own idea of him."
While admitting that Fields
had a reputation for hating
children, Steiger slays that
wasn't really the case but
was part of the carefully
maintained facade.
"He gave gifts to children,"
Fields' interpreter claims,
"but he insisted that his kind-
nesses be kept secret."
The public is interested in
Fields now, Steiger thinks,
because he was an individu-
alist who refused to meet
anyone's standards except
his own.
One of Steiger's more re-
cent films is "Mussolini - the
Last Act" in which he played
the Italian dictator, giving
him, he thinks, some seldom
suspected dimensions.
"The. film was about the
last four days of his life,"
Steiger explains, "when he
was a desperately tired, old
man who wanted to die.
"I gave them the idea of
putting film clips of the real
Mussolini into the picture and
then I did two scenes when he
was younger, but i didn't do
his whole life. We concen-
trated on the last four days
when he was defeated.
"However, I insisted upon
those flashbacks so that the
picture wouldn't look like an
ode to Fascism."
